my cousin-in-law

Did the skull. Sweet!

Speaking of which, I had a dumb idea of mine conversation with my cousin in law, and I going to spread my dumbness here.

My question to him was: if one of the problems with graffiti art is its permanence, would there be any benefit of chalk as an alternative? Could you spread graffiti art to boring sidewalks with chalk? I'd like to see it, but would other folks be cool with it and would graffiti artists even do it?

»

I was thinking the same thng the other day

Chalk is also friendlier to the environment. I'm unhappy with the pools of paint water that accumulate in that alley sometimes.
»

likewise

Another goal of mine (necessitating funding) is to see an Oly artist develop some sort of paint trap for the excess paint in the alley. I figure that if done properly they could actually be turned into some sort of permanent sculpture.

Part of the reason I'm so diligent in keeping up with the wall is I'm positive that over time the documentation will prove valuable for OFS. With that value would come increased opportunities to secure funding for maintenance and development. I just need time. And for my equipment to not break down on me.

nice

A year and a half into Olympia and I've come to this conclusion: all of the locals are related.

In my opinion, your cousin-in-law is really good. Unfortunately I hear Olympia will lose said cousin-in-law this summer. One more Oly artist to NYC...

Here are a couple of chalk graffiti examples: shadows, "3D" and outlaw.

interesting chalking rules

From Carnegie-Mellon:

Chalk drawings on sidewalks will not be considered punishable graffiti. However, these drawings may not be destructive or libelous in any way. Chalking shall be limited to sidewalks. Chalking may not occur on the inside or outside walls of University buildings. In addition, chalking may occur only on horizontal surfaces that will be exposed to the elements. This means that chalking will not be allowed on covered sidewalk areas, vertical portions of outdoor stairs, retaining walls, and other similar areas. Failure to comply with these conditions will be a violation of the graffiti policy.

Might be a way to encourage chalking on public sidewalks.

The 3D folks freak me out

I like the shadow stuff. Even I might be able to do that! And put that outlaw in jail or make her lick up the chalk until the sidewalk shines! She wouldn't get away with that in clean-and-shiny Singapore!!

Thank God the "Booh Yah"

is finally getting covered!

I still don't get it.

A skull. Large blue text. Something green and black. Latex and enamel paint flowing into the sewer. Certainly no Monet, Hieronymus Bosch, Dali....

God I'm such a philistine. Please forgive me. I'll shut up now.

How many "don't get its"

did it take to get to Bosch? Good thing they didn't stop at the first one.

Well...

They're not trying to be a Monet, Bosch or Dali, just like Dali most certainly wasn't trying to be Monet. As far as our tastes are concerned, we're all trained. When Manet first showed Olympia at the 1865 Paris Salon the painting needed guards to protect it from angry mobs. Personally, I like watching the process...seeing how people get better through constant practice, how their control improves, how their imagination takes shape.

Culturally we're actually pretty late to the game of language as large scale visual art. As a society we haven't become entirely accustomed to it yet, but that's changing. And as more artists add their two cents to the movement our sense of aesthetics change along with it. Graffiti styled art is in almost every major modern art collection in the world.

Our own King Solomon's Reef has some lettering on it that takes an impressive level of skill. Olympia is lucky, we have art everywhere. We need to work at it in order to encourage and retain it.

"In order to acquire a growing and lasting respect in society, it is a good thing, if you possess great talent, to give, early in your youth, a very hard kick to the right shin of the society that you love. After that, be a snob." - Salvador Dali

its no dali, or bosch,

it is an Alter Ego, who does not care the amount of effort or the severity of the consequences of the action, but only the reaction. Spiritual revolution has come and gone time and time again, and we as a society have missed the ticket, time and time again... If we do not choose to open our eyes to see the truth and wake up, we may just sleep for ever, to let this world and all its wonders slip away from between our very fingers. I feel that it is my duty as an artist to prepare people for the truth, for when they are ready to see it. ~the Awake ONE
