I'm not trying to be a prick
Submitted by Merwyn Haskett on Tue, 08/14/2007 - 2:17pm.What makes this particular one not so hot?
It's a fair call, but Society's to blame. ~ Right! We'll be charging them too!
not quite
Submitted by enpen on Tue, 08/14/2007 - 2:47pm.Actually, I think what I've said is that the creation of imaginary things like property rights is not going to curb the reality of a human compulsion to create and leave evidence of passage. That aside, what I'm really for is working toward some happy medium wherein we can work together as a social unit to foster the creative impulse and provide people the peace of mind that comes with this private property illusion. Hence my desire for more Free Walls and more opportunities for children to learn self-expression in an accepting environment rather than a resisting one.
What makes this particular one not-so-hot is that since the OFS is the only game in town currently willing to open up a wall of their own free will, they get the brunt of the anger from the other building owners and the ODA. The concentration of the illegal writing on walls in the area surrounding the Free Wall creates a false causal connection between the Free Wall and graffiti everywhere in the city. What the ODA and the local business owners don't see is the graffiti not on walls throughout downtown because the writers were too busy working on the Free Wall to cover the rest of Olympia. Graffiti and the urban art movement are here whether people like it or not. Our reaction on a societal level will dictate whether or not this movement benefits Olympia or lands a bunch of our kids in jail and costs the tax payers a lot of money.
Is it the supple reed or the rigid post that survives a tornado?
ooh! ooh! I know! I know!
