From the Abyss

Rising slow from the mist of sleep
    and shadows of old fears--
I stretch and yawn,
    reaching beyond
        the blankets of the years.

Breathing memories in coffee steam,
    cup scalding my fingers--
I warm old hurts
    with dawn's rose burst
         filtering through my windows.

Hope emerges from the abyss
    formed of lost wishes--
While the pain
    dries like rain,
        sweetened with honey kisses.
