Heard this today. Happened at Harrison and Division, around 4:30ish... a person "flying a sign" started getting into traffic, beating on windows, hitting cars, blocking traffic, etc... in an attempt to strong arm money from folks. I did see the police response looking for the guy, Sgt. Paul Johnson (a fine gentleman BTW) drove around a few times, as well as another officer. I hope they caught the guy. Agressive panhandling and assault like this is not a good thing. Not the sort of thing I picture happening in Olympia. I left Seattle partly to get away from that kind of crap.

I think...
Submitted by Rob Richards on Thu, 03/13/2008 - 11:33pm.The person who did this probably needs some kind of support that they're not currently receiving.
I agree
Submitted by security_six on Thu, 03/13/2008 - 11:48pm.And I hope that this person can get the help they need. It's sad and frustrating at the same time. Fortunately from what I heard aside from a few scared folks nothing happened. I understand he was targeting older women in their cars... That's why I carry pepper spray...

well,
Submitted by Rob Richards on Thu, 03/13/2008 - 11:51pm.Ehh....
Submitted by security_six on Thu, 03/13/2008 - 11:52pm.He was engaging in violent and illegal behavior. That's all I care to know. The folks at the jail can figure out his issues. Maybe he just got lucky and found women for his victims, but I wonder if he would have been as agressive with me?

We'll never know.
Submitted by Rob Richards on Thu, 03/13/2008 - 11:55pm.Nope
Submitted by security_six on Thu, 03/13/2008 - 11:58pm.Unless the OPD picked him up and there is a report... To me the real question is, how hard is it for folks like that to get help? And what controls are there in place to protect folks from those like him...
Hey, wait. I have Sgt. Johnson's card. I may email him and ask about this. Anyone interested enough for this?

Yeah, I'd love to hear what was said.
Submitted by Rob Richards on Thu, 03/13/2008 - 11:59pm.I'll try and find the card
Submitted by security_six on Fri, 03/14/2008 - 12:01am.... I saw Sgt. Johnson driving around so I know he was there. Probably get a pretty generic response "citizen complaint, subject aprehended/not aprhended booked for medical eval/pending charges etc...

That would be Satellites
Submitted by a.future.with.n... on Fri, 03/14/2008 - 1:51am.We call him that because he talks about his thoughts being controlled from satellites. There is absolutely no way that man is anywhere near the reality we share. He is WAY out there. I've had him turn aggressive with me before. Unfortunately OPD doesn't like to deal with people like that. I've seen a women I know to be chronically schizophrenic take a swing at a cop before and they let her go. When I asked about why they told me that she just causes problems in the jail and there's no room in Western State so it's easier on them to just let mentally ill people go than incarcerate them.
This isn't OPD's fault. There is literally NO PLACE for a mentally ill person to go to get treatment. nowhere. nothing. St. Petes won't take people unless they actively try to commit suicide, Western State won't take them unless they commit a felony, shelters won't take them because they freak out. There's just nowhere for them to go.
Of course it's not OK for someone to go hitting cars and threatening people, but we're not talking about "anti-social" behavior here, we're talking about serious, honest-to-goodness untreated mental illness. It's a whole different ball park from a "smile if u masterbate" sign.
I'm not trying to discount it or write it off, I'm just saying that incidents like these are different from the things people usually don't like about pan handlers.
It's sad
Submitted by Norm on Fri, 03/14/2008 - 11:34am.For some reason the system just doesn't want to pony up for mental illness. Aids, cancer, pregnancy, drug abuse, alcoholism, anger management, migraines, erectile dysfunction all get far more attention than mental illness.
Eventually we will have to prioritize, or it's all going to fall apart.
Thanks Future...
Submitted by security_six on Fri, 03/14/2008 - 11:40am.It makes me sad that folks can't get the help they need. For some reason there is still a stigma associated with mental illness and I can't figure out why. For a supposedly advanced society we suck sometimes.

the why
Submitted by enpen on Fri, 03/14/2008 - 12:38pm.Old habits die hard. Racism, sexism, belief in measurable intelligence, belief that mental illness is a moral failing, etc., etc., etc. Systemic educational efforts and a willingness for critical introspection are the only cures I know of...aside from wiping the slate clean.

Handguns for the Homeless...
Submitted by The Original Yoda on Fri, 03/14/2008 - 1:01pm....it's a vital, charitable cause - to proved guns, ammunition and safety training - to those who face the dangers of street life, in Oly.
Wouldn't a project like this solve a lot of problems?
For those capable, willing and able
Submitted by security_six on Fri, 03/14/2008 - 9:45pm.It could be interesting... Figure a decent hi-point 9mm for around $150. Safety training, mental health and criminal checks, ammo, etc... the money and man power might pay the downpayment on a cheap place. Although I would never suggest a person capable of bearing arms should be denied that, regardless of situation.
