Here is a thread for discussing our technical problems here and sharing any work arounds we find.

What is our current list? I know of:

  • tracker problems, the dang thing just don't track correctly
  • access denied msgs
  • error msgs boxes that don't make sense, usually posts then go through just fine but not always
  • posts actually fully disappearing between preview and post

I'm back online, now.

But after 10 days in Mexico, it's taking a little while to jump start the ol' brain. I'll get in touch with Nat and see if we can start to address the problems on this list.

The Red Box

I found the fix to the red box at the top of blog posts a month ago or so.

The Red Box comment

The two lines of code between the straight lines represent the change.  + is the new line, - is the old.  The fix is to change (-)n.body to (+)r.body.

I just supported Mike's idea with a few bucks.  You should too!

Drupal logging:  I'm far from a drupal expert but poking around and building my own little test box has given me much more insight into the product.  I'd be happy to review any current logs for errors to help Nat find the root of the problems a little quicker.

Mexico?

A country where the caiman is a native species?

Nat? I see my Nat=Tan guess was not so far off.

Where there is smoke, if I am allowed to mess up a cliche, there are caimans. When the weather warms up, I'll be glad I don't live in Olympia.

Otherwise, I'm coming around to not missing the tracker. The new situation just changes the way we approach discussions. I can adjust. The "Access Denied" messages are sort of fun. We get to see how many bloggers are willing to jump in and take it personally when in fact it is only a stupid computer glitch. Sort of a broader lesson there about human nature, I'd say.

I almost always get the red/pink error box on my long posts now. It has become my friend. Also, I have developed the habit of copying those long ones before posting, since they have been vanishing most of the time when I submit them. The second time usually works.

We're still growing and learning and redefining ourselves here on OlyBlog. We remain an experiment. The technical bugs are just a reflection of our youth. When we become staid, secure, sedate and routine then we are cooked, done.

So I salute the loss of the tracker. Maybe we needed it in order to shake things up a bit and make our brains work in a different way.

Without the Tracker

Here's my vote for leaving the tracker the way it is. I think this promotes a more thorough browsing of the blogs and the entire site, rather than just those heated topics that stay at the top of the queue.
