May the camps existence continue to be an asset

to our community and an inspiration the house-less worldwide.

I wholeheartedly support this choice.

The residents and organizers of Camp Quixote did more than just build a tent city. Intentionally or not, they changed the conventional thinking about homelessness and dealing with homelessness in our community.

No, not everyone in the community suddenly likes homeless people. But now the political establishment sees the issue differently, or at least is forced to deal with it differently, which is effectively the same thing. From demanding the camp be shut down, the local governments are passing ordinances to officially allow it. Even the reactionary newspaper had to admit the camp had positive results.

The activist community sees things differently now. They are much more inspired to think they can create positive things, even without initial government support.

The churches and many volunteers who do not see themselves as activists are able to see a way to help out in a very concrete way.

And of course, the residents of Camp Quixote have redefined "homeless people" in many people's mind. And all that is in addition to the actual goal of giving some people a stable and safe place to live.

Camp Quixote changed the conversation in profound ways. They're my people of the year.

It's not actually a 'Person'

Camp Quixote Rocks

So, I am curious, was there a runner-up?
»

No clear runners up

Foutch, TJ, and Ware had a few mentions as did the winter flood emergency workers.
»

Nomination

I was hoping to make another nomination for "PMR", but that's okay. PMR will just have to step it up for next year.

Wondering...

if people would be willing to get together to throw a dinner for the Camp and chip in to present them with a plaque for this honor. I'm willing to get the plaque, anybody want to organize a meal and set a date?
»

Community meal

Rob, nice idea. How about I buy the plaque and you and your friends (Bread and Roses? PPU?) organize and put on a community meal. I believe you're familiar with the folks at First Christian Church who, hopefully, could offer space for an event, so you might approach them. If FCC can't do this I believe we can arrange something at St. John's Episcopal Church.

Some of us who work to sustain Camp Quixote ongoing - including camp members and people of faith - are already thinking toward the first anniversary around Feb. 1. Let us know.

When I feed the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why the poor have no food, they call me a communist.  -  Dom Helder Camara, Archbishop of Recife, Brazil
