In three weeks (soon!) there will be a weekend workshop at Evergreen focused on bridging personal differences through authentic communication. The workshop uses a model called Community Building, and was developed by M. Scott Peck, who wrote extensively about it in his book The Different Drum. Led by professional facilitators, participants work to create a safe place space that allows for the possibility of deep human connection. Rather than teach or do activities, facilitators will make use of silence, and introduce simple guidelines such as "speak when moved to speak."

Note to students: many Evergreen faculty are willing to use a workshop like this as part of your course-work if it relates to what you're studying!

When: Saturday and Sunday, October 22-23

Where: The Evergreen State College

Cost: $10 student, $30 public (a typical workshop costs in excess of $250! "Thanks" to Student Activities and Common Bread for their financial support!)

Contact: Prior registration is required. For more information, or to register, call 867-6033, or e-mail sterya12@evergreen.edu. Also see http://www.fce-community.org for more information on Community Building.

Workshop Mission Statement: "There is a yearning in the heart for peace. Because of the wounds and rejections we have received in past relationships, we are frightened by the risk of disarming ourselves. In our fear, we discount the dream of authentic community as merely visionary. But there are methods by which people can come back together, and by which the old wounds can be healed. It is the mission of this workshop to make hope real again, and the vision actually manifest in a world which has almost forgotten the glory of what it means to be human."

A class in non-hierarchical campaign organizing.

This class is for anyone wanting to further social, economic and environmental justice. No age requirements, no political experience necessary, experts are welcome.

This class can be designed in three different ways.

  1. The class actively participates in a single local campaign.
  2. Individuals within the class pursue different campaigns and use class time to compare and contrast.
  3. Study past campaigns of the class’s choosing and learn what’s possible today.
  • Learn how to organize locally more effectively by getting your message out to those who need to hear it.
  • Learn offensive and defensive techniques that adapt to different times and situations.
  • Learn how to use the media to get free publicity for your campaign.
  • Workshops featuring a wide variety of mediums (not limited to the production of flyers, radio, theatre, digital photography, news reporting for print and radio, press releases, how to use the phone, email, internet, zines, stickers, newspapers, silk-screening, button making, banner making, and many more). Class participants will also learn how to choose mediums most effective for the campaign.

Register for this and other Fall Free School classes at http://olympiafreeschool.org.
