There is a soldier behind me
in line
here at this coffee shop
with his girl
it is sweet

I want to touch him
on the sleeve
bless him
curse war
bless him
curse hate
bless him
ask him if he has the time

of day

An American Rivers Project:
"In the coming years residents of Puget Sound will have an opportunity to restore vital salmon habitat in the state’s capitol city. Fish and wildlife officials are proposing to study the feasibility of removing Capitol Lake Dam, located at the mouth of the Deschutes River at Budd Inlet, and restoring the tidal estuary to benefit water quality, fish, and wildlife."

Although it will take some getting used to, in time, I know that I will be able to adjust to the estuarine landscape, and learn to appreciate the aesthetic even more than I do the lake as it presently exists.

The link to the Puget Sound Rivers project (listed above) has great information about restoration of the Deschutes tidal estuary to its naturally occuring condition. Essentially, it will not only benefit the wildlife, but us as well.

I'm filled with questions this morning. Anyone have answers?

Do we here in Olympia tend to relate more to Seattle, or to Portland?

Do any of us refer to this area as "Tri-cities"? I thought that term was only used for Kennewick/Pasco/Richland. But the author Lawrence Wright writes that our area is known as "Tri-cities" in his book Remembering Satan.

What browser do you use?

I'm becoming an unintentional connoisseur of browsers. I think I've finally narrowed the assortment down to what works for me.

Internet Explorer, because sometimes you just have to.

K-Meleon, because it is stripped down and fast, lean and mean. And it has tabbed browsing, they call it layers.

Flock, which is not yet ready for public consumption but shows great promise, blogging/tagging/photoing all bundled in.

Firefox, because I am addicted. Tabbed browsing! Extensions galore! That cute fox!

I'll even list my Firefox extensions, which I feel sure is a truly geeky thing to do:

"Anytime you cut a fir tree down and put lights and decorations on it inside, it’s a Christmas tree. It’s not a holiday tree."

Apparently Rep. Ahern has been anointed The Power That Names. How much does he get paid for this?

Exciting Details

I now count at least 26 independent blogs in Olympia, and I'm sure there are more that I don't know about.  I've been slowly adding feeds to OlyBlog for all the local blogs, but many don't have an rss subscription.

(We now have a single feed that includes content from all the blogs, but they're all mixed up together.  I find this kind of clunky -- I'd much rather be able to make an individual feed for each one.)

So: if you have a blog, and you would like to have OlyBlog carry your feed, please set up rss on your site and let me know.

Blog on.

[update]

I wonder if any of our wonderful OlyBloggers would like to represent us at the Blogger's Conference in Jan.  I won't be able to make it to the Friday session, but I'd like OlyBlog to make a showing, press the flesh, shmooze, and track what's happening for the blog (maybe even blog in real time!).  Anyone up for it?

Feb 8 2006 - 12:00pm
The SPEECH Annual Meeting will be on Wednesday February 8, at 7:00 pm at Traditions Fair Trade Cafe in downtown Olympia. Please join us for an evening of old friends, new faces and baked goods -- and to hear more about our ideas for the future of Green Pages.

We are also recruiting volunteers for the Green Pages staff:

The current staff of Green Pages (GP) would like to invite all who are interested to join us in the production of this independent, community newspaper.

Staff double as SPEECH board members, but the focus of our meetings will be to brainstorm upcoming stories and shape future issues of Green Pages. Our aim is to come together regularly as a writers, editors and newspaper production staff, rather than hold run-of-the-mill, business-style board meetings.

GP staff can contribute articles or regular columns, make decisions about the look and layout of the publication, act as liaisons with other groups who want their information or stories published, distribute the paper and help with the organizational/business side of GP and SPEECH.

Please plan on attending the annual meeting to learn more or contact the SPEECH office at speech@zhonka.net or 786-6349. Be sure to include your phone number or email address so we can get in touch with you.

A little poetry to start your weekend -- from wither in prime:

When I went to school in Olympia
Everyone's the same
What do you do with a revolution?
When I went to school in Olympia
And everyone's the same
We look the same
We talk the same
Well don't you please make me real- fuck you
Make me sick- fuck you
Make me real- fuck you
When I went to school in Olympia
Everyone's the same
And so are you, in Olympia
Everyone's the same
We look the same
We talk the same
We even fuck the same
When I went to school in Olympia
Don't you please make me real, come on
Make me sick- come on
Make me real- yeah yeah

I reviewed the list of free access facilities in the article and also linked to the Zhonka site - - funny, the lists were identical. (The other links were pretty user non-friendly...no quick info there) I wish for a more thorough listing - - I'm aware of at least two sites (Plenty and the Soup House) that are not hosted through Zhonka. Surely there are many others.
