![]() The Library had study desk modules grouped into quarters. If viewed from above, the top of the panel separators formed the shape of a swastika. We found this to be a bit unsettling. Click here for a larger image.

Builders fight rules on rainwater runoff The building industry association said in a statement that the new regulation "foists unreasonable demands and unattainable goals on the backs of hardworking contractors, and was adopted by unelected (Ecology Department) bureaucrats. People sure sound adversarial, hopefully everyone can figure out how to chill and talk with one another again soon.

![]() Hope everyone is warm and cozy on this shortest day and longest night of the year. Time for hot spiced cider and mulled wine and whatever else we want to lift in toast to the season.

Be careful what you blog...you might end up in prison. The question here isn't guilt over the crime, but if there is a difference between writing in a personal journal on paper and one online. In order to obtain the one on paper, they would have to have a search warrant - but post it online for everyone to see and you find yourself subject to any laws concerning the content. More than one blogger has been arrested for a posting and more will happen, The question is how do you feel about blog posts being used as evidence?

Grocery Outlet, on Harrison and Division in westside Oly, looks to be doing well. They have loyal customers now who cruise through on a quest for good buys. One of the many things the store is doing right is fitting their inventory to the area. They work hard on getting in organic products. I got into a conversation with a fellow shopper recently and we agreed that it is a great store for trying new things out. We can experiment, buy brands we maybe have never heard of, for say 99 cents, if we don't like it, not a big loss. If we do, we have found something new to enjoy. More...

A story praising the productivity of a Tumwater mail processing plant has been withheld from publication because it could have undermined the U.S. Postal Service’s efforts to transfer mail cancellation services to Tacoma, a union official charged Tuesday. (Thank you Clint Burelson for keeping us updated.)

This one took place in Fall quarter 1976. We were in a group contract called "The Founding Period." The program was an Evergreen version of a pre-law course. We were studying the philosophical underpinnings, theory, and reality of the United States Constitution.

There were two very different types of students in this group. First, there were the future attorneys. Serious-minded students who knew exactly where they were going and had their grad schools picked out. And secondly, there were the rest of us-- drifting humanities-liberal arts-look-out-the-window daydreamers. I have mentioned I was not the world's greatest student, haven't I? Here's how I was able to identify who was who among my fellow pupils. We attended a guest lecture by faculty member Alan Nasser. I think the topic was "logical thinking" or something like that. Anyway, he opened up the talk with the statement, "By the time I am through with you, your minds will become steel traps!" And all the drifting humanities-liberal arts-look-out-the-window daydreamers slapped their palms on the tops of their craniums and in unison yelled out, "Noooooooooooo!!!"
