» The Emma Goldman Youth & Homeless Outreach Project has leased a new facility at 1015 4th Avenue which will house a thrift shop called Emma’s Closet where donations not applicable to street life will be sold. The proceeds of these sales will support EGYHOP’s community outreach efforts. These efforts include provision of warm clothing, blankets or sleeping bags, medical attention, and a familiar, friendly face to those who need them. EGYHOP’s bike project will be housed in the basement of the facility. EGYHOP Bike Project provides free bikes to low/no income people. Please drop by to see the new facility and hear more about our plans. We look forward to your visit. For more info (360) 791-2241 or EGYHOP This grass roots organization survives totally on the support of the community; we spread the love that our community donates to EGYHOP.

Pre-flight. Sitting and sitting and sitting. That’s what traveling is all about. I sat in molasses traffic for what seemed like days on the way to the airport. Now here I am sitting in the airport bar, waiting to go sit on a plane to take me to another airport where I get to sit some more just to sit on another plane. Then when I arrive in Halifax I get to sit through a conference. Then all of that travel sitting gets repeated. No wonder Americans are so fat; all of our technological advancements go towards making sure we can sit on our asses everywhere we go. We literally fly by the seat of our pants, traveling thousands of miles without working a single muscle except our jaws. On the television here at the Sea-Tac Bar is an eating contest, grown men shoveling cold cuts into their mouths hand-over-fist. This should be shocking but it’s not, I see this same behavior everyday in the news. Gluttonous nihilistic expansionism has infected every facet of our society and it makes me ill. That’s what eating like that can do.

Cinema Treasures blogs about the closure of two Regal theaters in the Olympia area.
» Closing are the Lacey Cinemas (eight screens) and the Capital Mall 4. Both will close Thursday, Aug. 25. A local church will acquire the Lacey Cinemas space this year. The fate of the Capital Mall space (which is actually inside the mall) is not decided. Century Theaters, however, has announced plans to build a 14-screen theater on the mall campus. That means a net addition of only four screens with the new 16 screen theater in Lacey.

Welcome to OlyBlog. We look forward to hearing what you have to say. There are several ways to submit content to the site. In order to allow Rick (your humble blog administrator) to have some kind of a life, please choose type of submission channel that best fits with your purpose. Here are the choices:
Here is a quick primer on how to use html codes to make your text readable. html code uses angle brackets to hide the commands so that we don't have to look at them when the text is posted. Here is the left bracket "<" (above the comma on most keyboards), and the right one ">" (above the period). All codes go between the left and right brackets with no spaces. Ok. Here are the codes (I can't include the brackets with the examples below -- you wouldn't be able to see them!):
Replace all the quotes with the left and right brackets, and you'll be coding in html. Use the "preview" function to see how your posts look before you submit them. This should allow you to create basic text that looks ok. If you want to try more fancy codes, go here for more information.

Bread & Roses has provided services to poor and homeless individuals and families in Olympia for 25 years. B&R currently offers 2 shelters, an Advocacy Center, street library and monthly newspaper. While the organization has been a magnet for youthful activism in Olympia, it has struggled with financial hardship throughout its history. With a mission to serve poor, homeless and marginalized people of Thurston County, it is not surprising that B&R suffers from few resources.
This Labor Day season, Thurston county residents can support Bread & Roses during “Work-a-Day for Bread & Roses

On Friday, September 23rd , The Olympia Movement for Justice and Peace(OMJP) invites you to join us in an 18 mile walk from Sylvester Park in downtown Olympia all the way to Ft. Lewis. The purpose of this march for peace is to make a strong and visible stand against the U.S. war and to build a movement calling for the withdrawal of the United States from Iraq. We believe that the time is ripe to connect the growing anti-Iraq war feelings in the U.S. to visible protest and a growing anti-war movement. We have the opportunity to further isolate the Bush Administration and the neoconservative agenda and lead to a situation where they must withdraw from Iraq and realize they cannot build popular support for another war.
Over the last two years, the support for this war has continued to decline for a variety of reasons including the growing numbers of U.S. casualties, the realization that the war has not made the U.S. people any safer, the continuing resistance in Iraq to the U.S. occupation, the learning about torturing of Iraqis in Abu Graib and other prisons, and the growing realization that there is no light at the end of the tunnel, that the U.S. military occupation of Iraq has no end in sight. On the other hand, the despair caused by Bush’s reelection and the commonly held view that the United States should not have gone to war in Iraq but withdrawal would make things worse for the Iraqi people has limited large scale active protest and resistance to the war.
The powerful speaking out by Cindy Sheehan at Camp Casey is Crawford, Texas in the last month about the death of her son in Iraq, the refusal of President Bush to meet with her and her call for immediate withdrawal of the U.S. from Iraq has caught the nation’s attention. Not only is she seen sympathetically by millions and millions of people but she and the social movement around her has led to increased interest in examining the war and the case for withdrawal. Part of Cindy Sheehan’s appeal is that she is the mother of a dead soldier. It is also that her actions are directly against the war while simultaneously showing compassion and concern for the U.S. troops who are in Iraq or who will be sent there. It is a position that says concern for the troops means calling for an end to the war, not supporting the war, and a critique of the use and effects of depleted uranium and for the psychological and economic problems many of the troops will have when they return. Her position and ours also means concern for all casualties of this war, the more than 100,000 dead Iraqis and the more than 2,000 from the U.S. and other countries.
