Anyone else watch this program? It's pretty interesting. I didn't know his wife Mary was involved with accepting bribes, cooking the books, et cetera while she was the First Lady.
» President Lincoln also privately viewed himself as being put into this world to become president and save the Union. It was a personal mission for him, regardless of how unpopular the conflict was with the people in the Northern region. Also commenting on how during heavy Union losses the public began to blame Lincoln "and his policies" for the death toll. He was respected, though, because of how empathetic he was with the families who had lost (since it was, after all, his decision to go to war). Good piece of viewing if you get the chance to watch. EDIT: Now historians are discussing Lincoln "being a dictator." They're all in agreement that if we had lived during the time we would have viewed Lincoln as such but are discussing whether it was necessary and, as one historian is arguing, was "more serious" (the Civil War) than "the war on terror." For the record, Licoln "shut down newspapers and imprisoned twelve to fifteen thousand people" for no more than supporting the Confederacy.

I did a little snooping on the web and found the following press release on Overthrow.com:
Then there's this update on nukeisrael.com:
And this:
I have the feeling that, if these are folks that are heading for Olympia tomorrow, it will be difficult for counter-protesters to stand by in silent witness. I urge people who go to prepare yourself to see and hear things that you haven't ever seen before. Only in this way will you be able to exhibit restraint in the face of some pretty nasty types. Otherwise, I fear there is the potential for real ugliness.

From the Olympian: The rain that fell on South Sound on Friday marked the 34th consecutive day of measurable wet stuff at the National Weather Service station at Olympia Regional Airport, breaking the record of 33 straight days of rain set in 1953.

The winter issue of the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission News is out, you can access a copy online. Various news feeds are available as are mail subscriptions. Great articles and photographs as always. I'm reading through Billy Frank Jr.'s column A Dead Fish is a Dead Fish about the vital importance of habitat. Also check out Emmett O'Connell's fine work. I've read the NWIFC News for years now and I'm always impressed by how much quality information is packed into just a few pages.

From Newsday:
» Google's flat refusal to hand over the contents of its search engine index to the federal government has opened up a cyberspace Pandora's box of questions and troubling computer privacy concerns. I was ok with the electronic evesdropping, simply because although there was the question of proceeding with an investigation without a warrant, it seemed each investigation was narrow in scope, limited to a specific individual with whom there was a reasonable belief they were communicating with suspected terrorists and those with strong ties. This, however, is very, very, broad. The government is simply asking for Google to hand over a list of 1 million random web addresses from which the government can skim through. I'm actually glad to see Google stand-up to the government, something Yahoo, MSN, and AOL did not do. |
