My housing has been in jeopardy for several days now, a few times it looked as if I was going to fall through that safety net of social services available to low income folks. I'm still not entirely out of the woods but am another successful step closer to housing security again.

I'm disclosing this because during this process, when I am able to think more clearly and get some mental distance from it all, I've realized that I have some things to say.

First, this is not easy. This is an entirely different universe than the universe of living with secure housing. It just is and there is nothing to debate. This is a different universe with different rules and experiences.

In my experience, social service folks, especially the front line people, are usually doing the very very best they can. They are often dealing with new more complex paperwork that not only confuses their clients but is often inefficient and confusing for them. Less funds, more paperwork, less staff, more need.

I had posted a story in another thread about ConocoPhillips being fined in the neighborhood of $500,000 but that they should instead be forced to pay for the entire cost, as it was their fault for the damage. Here's an interesting update to the story.

Olympian:ConocoPhillips to pay feds $2.3 million for oil spill:

SEATTLE - ConocoPhillips and a subsidiary that owns a tanker that spilled more than 1,000 gallons of crude oil that sullied 21 miles of Puget Sound shoreline have agreed to pay the federal government more than $2.3 million, the U.S. Coast Guard said Monday.

Years ago I hitchhiked into Oly from Seattle. The last driver who transported me suggested that The Spar was ideal for my next endeavor, I agreed and was dropped off at the door.

Lots of strong coffee, a huge cinnamon roll dripping with butter, a local newspaper, and a pencil were my tools. Eventually I had narrowed down rental apartment possibilities to my most likely list, I hit the phone, and soon had an appointment to see the manager of my first choice.

That time at The Spar gave me my Oly legs, so to speak, I could tell that I was still in the Pacific N.W., which was and is a good thing.

Many years later a bright colored notice hangs on the front door to The Spar, notice of application for a liquor license. For McMenamins. A friend and I enjoyed a nostalgic breakfast-all-day meal at The Spar recently, right at twilight, to note this transition.

We were seated at a window booth. To my right, outside, ghosted into view an older gentleman in a nice suit and lovely lemon yellow silk tie. That tie was nattily knotted and properly dimpled. I'm talkin' old school here. He was engaged in silently gazing through the window, not seeking anyone in particular, simply watching.

I realized that this man was remembering. I made sure to not stare at him and I felt reverent of his experience, hushed and even a touch protective. Eventually he walked in, slowly through the room, looking all around as if for the first and last time. His walk took him to the far end of the counter, there he shook hands with a staff person. His walk back on out was equally slow, purposeful, and solemn.

Many of us have Spar stories and memories. In this time of quick transition and change, may we all take a moment to remember The Spar.

There's a story on The Olympian's website right now about dropping the "SayWA" slogan.

At any rate, there's a quote near the bottom of the article that made me laugh and think about the Churchill "Young-Not Liberal-No Heart/Old-Not Conservative-No Brain" quote, given that the individual providing the comment in the article is a perfect example.

''Thirty-five years ago I smoked dope and probably could have come up with something like that,'' Darrell Bryan, general manager of Victoria Clipper, the region's largest tour operator, told The Associated Press in March.

Selma James will be at Traditions Fair Trade Cafe on Tuesday, October 17th at 7:00 pm

The Global Women's Strike - It's about investing in water, not war.  In caring, not killing.  I am trying to figure out how to push my calendar around to be there.  I continue to look for a means to create a better future.  Gandhi's model of simple living, yoked to the occasional big civil disobedience action still looks like the plan, but coordination and discipline are a problem.

Micro-credit investing and support make sense and are people to people plans.  I like them and have worked with a couple of those projects, but somehow we have to take the power out of the hands of the corporations and that's a real challenge.

Maybe Selma will have ideas or inspiration.  Fellow travellers, dreamers, seekers, gather round.

See you there?

I never could understand how the government is justified in not only taxing you to die but also taxing money that has already been taxed.

The Olympian:

Business owners take steps to avoid hit from estate tax:

But that preparation [of ownership transfer to the next of kin] - which [Lew Rents owner Dean] Eklund said can cost $50,000 to $60,000 including legal, accounting and appraisal costs - is pricey and additional costs mount up if insurance is purchased to help the next generation deal with the tax bills. Then, Eklund said, there are questions or uncertainties- for instance, would the company's banker continue offering lines of credit to the next generation?

And a bill for estate taxes, when combined with a federal estate tax of up to 47 percent for enormous estates, adds stress at a time the business already is under tremendous pressure to survive, Eklund said.
