Come and join us at our weekly potluck dinner!  The B&R house on 8th Ave(Meta, Phil, and Selena) hosts a potluck every Friday night at 6:00 PM.  Lots of yummy food and great company.  It's a hootin' good time!  All are welcome.

Directions:  1320 8th Ave SE near downtown Oly.  We're about four or five blocks uphill from City Hall on 8th Ave, between Eastside and Central streets, on the left hand side.

Some would cite this as further evidence that the American male is being further feminized while others might say it's simply part of the nanny culture we live in.

CNN: School bans tag, other chase games

Officials at an elementary school south of Boston have banned kids from playing tag, touch football and any other unsupervised chase game during recess for fear they'll get hurt and hold the school liable.

Recess is "a time when accidents can happen," said Willett Elementary School Principal Gaylene Heppe, who approved the ban.

There's even a semi-local angle.

Elementary schools in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Spokane, Washington, also recently banned tag during recess.

I looked for more articles on the subject and found this posted on Michelle Malkin's blog:

Massachussetts–the state that once spawned enough tax rebels to shuck off the crown and create a whole new country is now home to a school that has banned tag.

You can vote at KIRO's website on whether you think tag should be allowed during recess. Internet polling is far from scientific (though interesting) so take a heavy dose of salt, but the vote is currently running 95-5 in favor of allowing tag (and I presume other contact activities).

Vancouver B.C. has a supervised drug injection site: Insite. The Canadian federal government recently gave them a sixteen month extension of their operating license.

Insite is conducted as a scientific research project, documented results so far are highly encouraging, including:

  • More people in treatment
  • no increase in drug related crime in area, less vehicle break ins
  • less public injections and less injection related litter
  • less syringe sharing
  • no deaths

Why aren't we doing this here in the States?

Thursday night there will be one of the few opportunities to discuss I-933 before the election. The Thurston Democrats are hosting a forum at St. Johns on Capital Way.

We had an incredible discussion here over the last couple of days, I hope we can carry that on over.

Ignorant Movie Review:  fac·tôt'um

Response to title:  I've known about this movie for awhile as it was filmed in the Twin Cities area while I lived there.  I'm curious because it's about a writer (Henry Charles Bukowski) but I wasn't curious enough to rush out and see it before now as I've never been a big Bukowski fan.

Response to curbside poster:  I still don't get casting Matt Dillon as Bukowski.  He has perfect teeth.  What the fuck.

Response post-credits:  Some good and a lot that doesn't impress me, so in that respect, exactly like Bukowski's works.  Prior to seeing this movie my greatest respect for Bukowski's works came from the facts that he could give a shit what I think and he kept writing his way.  Leaving the movie, I maintain the exact same respect for Hank the writer.  I would recommend this movie to Hank's casual fandom and those interested in modern cult heros; I'd be surprised if his hardcore fans weren't disappointed.

Rating:   2.5 out of 5 Oly Stubbies and a glass of cheap Scotch.

Film Haiku:  Vomit between cabs,
             "some chips and mixed nuts",
                     a window in brick.

Remember awhile back that guy who was, you know, at that place? He had that thing with him, remember? And it rained? You know who I mean, that guy who had that thing with him? It was blue, I think.

Anyway, he wanted me to say "Hi."

I don't know about all of you, but sometimes I just need a good board game to work my way through modern geo-politicking.

And if you'd rather not leave the safety of your computer monitor, maybe this can help you pass some time today.
