I'm glad that M.R. Rossi posted the announcement about the City Council meeting on Tuesday. I think that everyone should head on down there and exercise a little participatory democracy. In particular, I'd encourage everyone to ask the following question, especially to those City Council members who support the ordinance to prevent people from occupying the 6' of sidewalk closest to a building: who, in particular, is claiming harm under the present system? Let this person enumerate the wrongs that have been committed, and explain how this change in city laws will improve the situation downtown. Let's have an open and transparent conversation about the options before the Council. If, however, no one steps forward to speak for this proposal, then let us hear no more about it -- we must not descend into a situation where unknown parties make backroom deals about what should be a public process to make public laws. If there is a grieved party, then by all means, let that person speak. If no one champions this cause, then there can be no action taken. For the Council to do otherwise would demonstrate a true lack of transparency.

In case you missed it. http://www.theolympian.com/101/story/50769.html From the Olympian: christian hillLACEY - Outdoors retailer Cabela's will announce this morning that it intends to build a 185,000-square-foot showroom in Hawks Prairie, City Manager Greg Cuoio said. The announcement that Cabela's will submit a development application ends months of negotiations between the Nebraska-based company and the property owner, Hawks Prairie LLC, on a project that is projected to create more than 600 full-time-equivalent jobs, draw at least 1.8 million out-of-state tourists into Thurston County each year and funnel $5.4 million in tax revenue into state, county and city coffers annually. Any thoughts or responses to this? I realize it isn't in Olympia but it is neighboring and is going to affect traffic etc.

Nov 17 2006 - 5:00pm Nov 21 2006 - 11:00pm Help End Discrimination Against The Homeless The Olymia City Council is planning on passing ordinances in the downtown that would make it more difficult for Olympia's homeless and street population to meet their basic needs. Please help us fight poverty and discrimination by coming to these events.
November 17th, Friday 5:00 pm One of the ordinances that the council is thinking about passing would criminalize sitting or hanging out the sidewalk within 6 feet from a business. Two council members who are pushing for this ordinance - Joe Hyer and Jeff Kingsbury - are downtown business owners. Let's tell them downtown is a place for people first. We will meet at Alpine Experience (408 Olympia Ave) hold a picket, march to Capitol Play House hold a picket, and then through downtown Olympia on the sidewalk.
November 21st, Tuesday 6:30 pm Come to the City Council chambers (900 Plum Street) during the public comments period, and tell the council you do not want Olympia adopting ordinances that make it harder for the homeless and street populations to strive. We need to fight poverty, not the poor.
