Breaking Story: Elizabeth de la Vega, former federal prosecutor has drafted an indictment of Bushco. for fraud in the run-up to the invasion of Iraq. This is what we have been waiting for.
» Let's jump on the bandwagon. This deserves calls to our representatives in congress. De la Vega's indictment deserves to be heard in a Court of Law with Subpoena Power. Here's a link and an excerpt (from tomdispatch.com): ...De la Vega has drawn up that indictment -- a "hypothetical" one, she hastens to add -- convened that grand jury, and held seven days of testimony. Yes, it's a grand jury directly out of her fertile brain and the federal agents who testify are fictional, but all the facts are true. She understands the case against the Bush administration down to the last detail; and she's produced, to my mind, the book of the post-election, investigative season: United States v. George W. Bush et al...

What could be better than to come out of the cold and find warmth with your fellow OlyBloggers at the Brotherhood Lounge on a snowy Monday Evening? I dare say, nothing could possibly be better.

UPDATE: According to my sources, Doug Mah will not be present at the council meeting, therefore will not be voting on this. It is still believed that the amendments will pass, either 4-2 or 5-1. It's a good bet that TJ Johnson will vote against them. At this point, I think thats a given. That means that Laura Ware is on the fence. It also means that Karen Messmer is on the fence, and I believe that Mayor Mark Foutch is as well. I'd like to think that Laura Ware will vote no, if she follows her heart, and her voting record, she will vote no. Mayor Foutch is historically against this kind of ordinance, though I think it's stickier for him this time. Karen Messmer should vote no on this. When she ran for office I interviewed her for a newspaper I was working for at the time that focused on poverty and homelessness. I got the feeling from talking to her that, a.) she is very down to earth and genuine, and b.) that she would oppose this kind of ordinance. Her big ticket item during her campaign was Parks and Sidewalks, which she touted as public space that should be open to everyone in the community. If she holds to the values that she campaigned on, she will vote no. I think we have a shot at beating these ordinances, it may be a long shot, perhaps a shot in the dark, but a shot nonetheless. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
» Keep those emails and phone calls rolling in to them, because something YOU say, might change one of their minds. ----------------------------------- I have it on good authority that the city council is going to pass the amendments to the sidewalk ordinance at tomorrow's meeting. I'm kind of shocked by this news, I thought perhaps we had swayed things in our favor. As it stands, TJ Johnson and Laura Ware are reportedly the only councilmembers we can count on to vote against it. Here is how to contact the Olympia City Council: We should hit them with as many emails as possible and as many phone calls as possible up until the meeting. At the meeting, we need to show up in force and speak out against this ordinance. If it passes, the first thing we can do is hit them with another round of phone calls and emails.
I hear a lot of people calling for boycotts and at this point I feel it's a bit divisive to do that. We need to maintain good relations with downtown businesses who may be on the fence about it.
Mostly, let's not be discouraged. I was on the phone earlier today commiserating with Michael Stoops, director of the National Coalition of the Homeless, and he expressed that many times these battles are lost at city hall and then won in a court room. The message here is that we're not done. Not by a long shot. We have to keep pressure on the city to drop this dead end ordinance and adopt policy that will end homelessness as opposed to maintaining it or criminalizing it.
I hope to see everyone at City Hall, 7pm, Tuesday.

» At last count (before they froze the voting) our favorite, the Palm Beach Post, was winning with over 2,000 votes. The Olympian is somewhere back in the pack at 1,000 or so. |
