if you haven't found the right holiday gift for yourself or that special someone, you can support the olympia 22 now by making a $50 donation, and i will give you 50 toy piano tokens which can be traded for a toy piano at dumpster values, last word books, or fire and earth in downtown olympia. to make a donation to the olympia 22, go to their web-site at www.olympia22.org. be sure to indicate that you want toy piano tokens while making your donations. then write to tokens@toypiano.org to arrange to get your tokens. there have been several exciting developments on the 2007 toy piano recital. while the exact date is still not certain, it will definitely be at the olympia film society capitol theater in olympia, washington ( www.olyfilm.org ), and will most likely be the first friday in april at 7 pm to coincide with the spring artswalk. this year's event will be a benefit for the olympia 22's legal defense ( www.olympia22.org ). the olympia 22 are people who engaged in civil disobedience to resist the use of the port of olympia by the military last spring. like last year, admission to the recital will be free. all money donated will go directly to the olympia 22. for more information on the recital, go to www.toypiano.org/recital. for more on toy piano tokens, go to www.toypiano.org/tokens

In light of what transpired last light in our city, and I still can't believe we had 5 people on our city council that would vote for this act of violence against the poor, I offer the following, it is known as "Gandhiji's Talisman". It is not a charm, or a token, but rather a thought that I wish those 5 people on our city council could have had in their hearts:
» I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test:

In the midst of anger & frustration over Olympia's City Council decision to move the civility ordinance forward, the story below offers inspiration for some additonal action. Last summer's nazi activity turned the community to take counter action in a way that benefits groups targeted by hate (some of you were surely involved in these efforts, thank you). In response to the city's move re: sidewalks, I personally pledge to donate money to groups that assist the populations and values impacted by the ordinance... So help me out - name the organizations I should donate to. And, if you're so inclined, join me in getting some extra cash into the hands of those who help people and protect rights (or, into the hands of those who occupy the sidewalks). (as with my bumper sticker entry of earlier this month, I know, too, that getting out my checkbook is not the only form of activism...) The passage of the expanded "Pedestrian Interference" ordinance last night was disappointing and disheartening.
» It should be understood, however, that this is not the same law we've been facing for the last few months. Laura Ware's amendments to the proposed ordinance altered its effect. The law we were fighting last week would have criminalized homelessness outright, representing the new kind of Jim Crow that is called around the nation "Quality of Life" law. Had this law passed, it would have called for nearly every non-violent action imagined. But it didn't pass as written. Councilor Ware's "friendly amendments" took most of the nastiness out of the new ordinance. The new law will only be in effect during daytime (7:00 AM till 10:00PM) hours, allowing people to take shelter under the awnings at night. Laura also insisted that, if businesses could get permits for tables and chairs, that the street people be able to get permits for busking, and that those permits be affordable (she was talking a range of 50 cents to five dollars for a long term permit). So long as we work with the street community to help them get these permits, the new law shouldn't have any really bad consequences. Particularly if we can successfully urge the council to add a few more sidewalk benches. The law that was passed won't fix downtown's problems, and the debate that has been stirred by the anti-homeless proposals of the last many months has been incredibly ugly. This debate has contributed to the notion of homeless people as problems rather than human beings, and I certainly hope to hear an apology for this. I must say, however, that continuing plans to commit civil disobedience and direct action will be at best counterproductive and at worst horribly irresponsible and destructive. Using civil disobedience and direct action in an effort to overturn a law that is (at worst!) ineffective runs the risk of undermining the legitimacy of these vital tactics and the credibility of the activists.

The following is a copy of an email that I just sent to the city council regarding the civility ordinance and downtown in general
»
All,
Last night's council meeting was disappointing to say the least. I simply do not understand the logic of the amendments, and I have spent hours trying, I have lost sleep over this, I have research and soul-searched and really stepped back and approached this from all sides. One of the louder arguments is that this targets a certain population. The answer to that has been that this is about behaviors not people. Let's look at what this ordinance, even if it doesn't target anyone, does to address the behaviors in question. Instead of these behaviors happening against the side of a building, they'll happen six feet over. Aggressive panhandling has always been illegal (though the Olympian doesn't recognize this), drug dealing and assault have always been illegal. People should call the police if these things occur. What do these amendments really do to change people's behaviors?

» Epoch Times Staff on assignment in Warsaw Nov 16, 2006 SHOCKING: Former Canadian Secretary of State for Asia-Pacific David Kilgour reveals striking new evidence of organ harvesting from living Falun Gong prisoners of conscience in China, at Asia Human Rights Week in Warsaw on November 14. (Jan Jekielek/The Epoch Times) A Chinese military surgeon had eight Chinese citizens killed to supply a single foreign patient with a new kidney, said former Canadian Secretary of State for Asia-Pacific David Kilgour on November 14. Kilgour spoke as a special guest at the Asian Human Rights Week forum in Warsaw, on day two of a five day program. "The incredible thing is that the doctor would…go down the names on sheets of paper looking for blood types and tissue types and so on, and he [the patient] would point at names on the list. The doctor would then go away and come back with organs," said Kilgour. While conducting research in Asia, Kilgour interviewed a now 35 year-old man (name and nationality withheld) who received a kidney transplant at Shanghai No. 1 People's Hospital in 2003. The man said that his surgeon was Dr Tan Jianming, Secretary General of the Chinese Research Society of Dialysis and Transplantation. Dr Tan also holds top posts in a number of Chinese military and civilian hospitals. The patient suffered from an antibody condition that made it difficult to find a suitable kidney. Over an eight day period, four separate kidneys were brought to him and tested, said Kilgour. When none of those worked, three months later he tried another four – the last of which was a fit. The man was later transferred to No. 85 Hospital of the People's Liberation Army to convalesce. Dr Tan told the man explicitly that these organs came from executed Chinese prisoners, and that at least some of the organs had been harvested secretly, against the donors' will.
