New estimates of the cost of the Iraq war put the total cost at over $2T (that's two trillion dollars - with the zeros: 2,000,000,000,000.00) Is it money well spent? You decide. I won't claim to be or try to be the decider. Wouldn't that belittle your intelligence, dear reader?
» The war is now costing roughly $10 Billion every month. That's over $330 Million ($330,000,000.00) every day; over $230,000 per minute. That's a lot of money. source: http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article15499.htm

Natural Learning, a publication of Olympia Free School, is looking for volunteers to come on board as we expand to offer an online journal. We are looking for writers, columnists, photographers, web masters, graphic designers, and anyone else with a zest for supporting alternatives in education in Olympia and abroad to volunteer in our community Free School. Natural Learning provides a diversity of real life experiences and stories, while honoring self-directed and community- based learning. We aim to be a community forum for exchanging ideas, insight, information, and perspectives about education which supports self-reliance and critical thinking. We encourage teens and adults to contribute stories of their success in educational programs unfettered by centralized or conventional schooling. We encourage homeschoolers, unschoolers, deschoolers, and free schoolers to get involved. If you would like to sample some of the articles we have featured in Natural Learning please visit us at online or pick up our latest journal around town or at the Olympia Free School (610 Columbia St). If you have an idea or proposal for an article you'd like to see covered in Natural Learning, we'd love to hear from you. Natural Learning, the two-year-old journal of the Olympia Free School is leaving the printed page to become a reliable online resource accessible to the community at large. However, Free School's current classes will continue to be listed in a printed catalog available (free, of course) in Thurston County. The next issue, listing winter classes, will be available in December. Meanwhile, stay tuned to Free School’s website for up to date information as we continue to serve as an open and free skill share network. If you are interested in offering or registering for our classes, don’t hesitate to register online. It is the vibrant and active support of community members like you which continues to make Free School and our publication, Natural Learning, a reliable resource in our community.

A new bargain: YouTube politics Imagine a 21st-century campaign without paid TV ads. Before Google bought YouTube, politics without those golden handcuffs would have seemed like a pipe dream. Instead, in the home stretch of a dreary midterm election, an entirely new political system, driven by interactive digital media, not broadcast dollars, is just on the horizon.

Here's a good film about Iraq:
» Sean Smith, the Guardian's award-winning war photographer, spent nearly six weeks with the 101st Division of the US army in Iraq. Watch his haunting observational film that explodes the myth around the claims that the Iraqis are preparing to take control of their own country. Contains some strong language. link: http://www.guardian[...]

I walked over to Madison Scenic Park tonight and took some pictures. The air smelled wonderful after the last few days' rain. Thick stratus clouds raced by over head, leaves - strewn about by the wind - were scattered all over, and clumped up where the heavy rain caused them to flow downhill, into obstructions, where they acted like dams. A beautiful night.

News coverage of the war is so much greater in the UK than it is here. I wonder why.
link: http://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Story/0,,1936708,00.html Pentagon admits extent of Iraq disorderMark Tran Wednesday November 1, 2006 Guardian Unlimited ![]() A US military helicopter flies over the heavily fortified Green Zone that houses the US Embassy and Iraqi government buildings at sunset. Photograph: Dusan Vranic/AP The US military has confirmed Iraq is close to chaos, in a classified briefing prepared just two weeks ago, which gives a stark assessment of the country. With Iraq the overriding issue for voters in the elections to Congress, the grim portrayal from the US Central Command, which has responsibility for the Middle East, can only provide further ammunition for Democrats in the last few days of campaigning before next Tuesday's vote.

Borat is as much as comedy as it is a documentary. The audience was silent during the fraternity scene ("He hitchhikes a ride with shamefully ignorant and misogynist frat boys."). Baron Cohen certainly went to every length to make the film as real as possible: The fact that Cohen was almost arrested during filming by the FBI is testament to the power of his outlandish humour and razor-sharp satire on anti-Semitism, misogyny and racism. If you don't know what the Borat character is about, here is a YouTube from an "Ali G" episode (the HBO show Borat is from. Also, keep in mind when watching that Cohen is Jewish). |
