Just a note to announce a couple of new free Wi-Fi hotspots in downtown Olympia, sponsored by Zhonka Broadband. The first is located at the Dockside Deli on Percival Landing, at 501 NW Columbia St. (The Old Whale's Tale). They have healthy sandwichs, great pizza (by the slice), and a limited selection of bottle beers as well. All-in-all a great place to hang out and get some laptop work done. They've even got a power strip by the window in the southmost section of the deli. The other one is Ben Moore's Cafe, which recently got "back-online" after an equipment failure late last year. Cosmo

I'll notice a particularly great photo in The Olympian, look for credit, and almost always...yep....its Tony Overman.

This comment was posted in response to my words in appreciation of the Olympian online, I want to share it more widely: Sarah, Thank you very, very much for your kind words. Every department in the newsroom works really hard to contribute and bring new ideas to the site and its very gratifying to see our work appreciated. We've got some big plans for the coming year and I can only hope they'll be as well received. If any OlyBloggers have any questions or comments about the site or need help with it, I can be reached at 754-5406 or chopkins@theolympian.com. Thanks again, Christopher Dean Hopkins Acting Online News Editor, The Olympian

Figure I would lighten it up a little bit. Here's an article on the difference between the Northwest and, quite frankly, the rest of the country when it comes to beer.
» Northwesterners traveling in other parts of the country who ask waitresses what kind of beer they have sometimes get served up a look as if they'd just asked about the contents of Grant's Tomb — while wearing a tutu. The choice isn't as complicated elsewhere. It often involves choosing between a Bud and a Bud Light.

Feb 6 2006 - 12:00pm I am really excited to see this show, as there are few rock shows like this in Olympia these days. I haven't heard much of Jarboe's work (what I've heard I've liked), but I am well acquainted with the Swans. They were an amazing dark experimental rock band around in the 80's and 90's that have made music that has stirred my heart. Jarboe and Swans founder Michael Gira were the two central members of the Swans. Joining Jarboe will be John Cobbett, who is also in Hammers of Misfortune, Ludicra, and Amber Asylum. For those of you who attended the Out of the Darkness metal festival last year, Hammers of Misfortune were that truly awesome melodic epic-metal band who performed on the same night as Wolves in the Throne Room. And speaking of the Wolves, they are also playing with Jarboe next Monday. No way!! However, I know nothing of Redbird, except I believe (she?) is from Portland. |
