Via Goldy (Horse's Ass). Noemie Maxwell does some rudimentary fact checking and finds that the WA Farm Bureau is exhibiting gross negligence with respect to the truth. Mr. Appel (of the Farm Bureau) gave a speech kicking off its initiative campaign to reform land use regulation in the state of Washington. From Washblog:

In that kickoff speech, which is published on the website promoting the initiative, Mr. Appel tells about Bruce Ritter who owns a small amount of non-agricultural land (10 acres) and presents his case as an example of a property owner whose plight resembles that of thousands of others across the state who would be helped by the initiative.

This choice is a matter of some public interest. Why not a farmer? And why only one family?

Odder than this choice of a representative landowner, and more troubling, is the inaccuracy in Mr. Appels' statement about the Ritter property. Half of the assertions made by Mr. Appel are easily debunked. The other half are not substantiated and are, in fact, shown by the public record to almost certainly be untrue.

The property in question is in Thurston County. Since the Farm Bureau has chosen this particular case as its chief example, it might be interesting to track its progress. Noemie's work calls into question the motives and tactics of the Farm Bureau. She concludes:

Political shortcuts and tricks, such as making inflammatory statements and presenting unverified assertions as facts - are not going to help farmers or anyone else deal with complex land use issues. Insulting and intimidating people who ask for accountability, is simply counterproductive. These tactics trivialize the real issues, stand in the way of public deliberation, prolong the personal and economic distress people are facing in Washington around land use, and increase our danger in relation to environmental challenges.

From Local people hang on to Yard Birds' glory days:

A brief history of the Chehalis Yard Birds store (stores also existed in Olympia and Shelton):

1947: Bill Jones and Richard Gillingham open the War Surplus Store in a tent on West Main Street in Centralia. Later that year, the two owners move the business to the complex where Sunbird Shopping Center is now located and named it Yard Birds Surplus.

1958: Yard Birds now occupies 110,000 square feet, and houses 16 departments and five lessees. The business is renamed the Yard Birds Family Shopping Center.

1971: Yard Birds moves to its final location between Centralia and Chehalis to construct what was the largest store in the area. The Yard Birds Family Shopping Center is 305,000 square feet. The new store introduced a 70-foot tall "Yard Bird" that could be seen from Interstate 5.

1976: The landmark "Yard Bird' is destroyed by fire. The fiberglass bird is ignited when an automobile backfires and catches fire underneath it. Pay -n- Save bought the store from Jones and Gillingham.

1990: The Chehalis store is flooded in January owing to heavy rains and a dike breaking. The store has water from 18 to 24 inches deep for 12 hours. The store was closed for eight days. The flood caused an estimated $1.1 million in damage.

1995: Yard Birds chairman of the board George Lee confirms that the Chehalis store will be closed.

Any one have any memories of the Olympia Yard Birds?

The Neo Nazi group, National Socialist Party, currently states on their regional site: "Hardcore Olympia Wa. Actions this Monday!"

The NSM is known to play games, plant false leads, change announcements. We as community members can remain calmly alert and aware.

Update 8:30PM, Saturday: Mr. Ramsey has changed his scroll to "Hardcore Olympia Wa. Actions this Wednesday!".

Regional NSM site by Mr. Ramsey, viewer beware.
