I've decided to celebrate our transation to Drupal 4.6 by putting together this new theme (a variation of "pushbutton" for those who care about that sort of thing). If this is too disturbing for you, or you just need the comfort of the old, familiar theme (kubrick_customized), you can still choose it in your personal features under "my account." The advantage of this one is that it will allow blocks on both sides of the screen, and it adjusts to use more of the screen. Let me know what you think.

Again, I think this site looks best in firefox, and I encourage everyone to download this open source browser.

Statement by Clint Burelson, President

The United States Postal Service is reducing service to many communities by consolidating mail canceling and sorting operations into just a few large hubs. The proposal to discontinue canceling mail in Olympia, and to move many mail operations to Tacoma on April 3rd, is part of a larger national restructuring where as many as 250 mail processing facilities may be closed and consolidated. These consolidation plans will benefit the big mailers at the expense of citizens, non-profit organizations, small businesses, and businesses of any size that require fast mail service to and from their customers.

From Editor & Publisher:

NEW YORK John Winn Miller, publisher of The Olympian, the Gannett daily in Olympia, Wash., says he's mad as hell and he's not going to take it anymore -- especially from popular syndicated columnist Cal Thomas.

"I'm tired of hearing radical columnists like you besmirch the good men and women who struggle daily to put out the very best newspaper they can," Miller writes in his paper today. Ironically, The Olympian itself carried Thomas' offending column on Sunday.

"Once again you've trotted out that stale cliche that newspapers like mine are undermined by what you claim is a liberal bias," Miller charges. "I know I can't change your mind. But I'll be doggone if I'm going to let your slander of my colleagues go unchallenged anymore."

Thomas had written that journalists hold different values than a majority of Americans, and the press needs an affirmative action program to "aggressively seek out more conservative reporters and editors who will report more stories that reflect something other than a consistently liberal point of view." This is something he has expressed in E&P several times in recent years.

On an side note: do you suppose E&P has noticed that the Olympian is now a McClatchy property?

From prnewswire:

WASHINGTON, March 21 /PRNewswire/ -- The Federal Interagency Coordinating Committee for the Prevention of Underage Drinking, chaired by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), in partnership with state and local agencies and organizations, is spearheading a nationwide campaign to curb underage drinking before it starts. Town hall meetings, with the theme "Start talking before they start drinking," are being convened on and around March 28, 2006, in approximately 1,200 communities across the country. In almost 4 dozen rural and urban Washington State communities, residents will come together to learn more about the latest research on the impact of underage drinking on both individuals and the community, and to discuss how their community can best prevent underage alcohol use by reducing demand, availability and access. State and local officials, parents and youth will join community leaders and organizations (spanning health, education, law enforcement, highway safety, and alcohol control) to encourage parents to talk with their children early and often about the negative effects of alcohol.

I could put this post from our founder on the front page also, but instead I think I'll give people a chance first to think before they click and view. Do you -really- want to know? Are you sure?

I'm thinking about opening an new stall down at the Farmer's Market. I have an unlimited supply of caiman meat, so I figure I'll just barbecue it real slow. Should be pretty tasty, don't you think?
