Time Warner, Big Corporate Mailers Getting Nervous About Public Resistance to Mail Consolidation Plans

Union and community resistance to Postal Service consolidation plans are making big corporate mailers such as Time Warner nervous. Through informational pickets, press releases, and visits to government representatives, postal workers have been educating the public that mail consolidation plans will benefit the big advertising mailers at the expense of citizens. For Time Warner and other corporate media, the union contention that corporate media are not adequately covering the story because of their corporate interests is especially troublesome.

The Postal Service, urged on by big advertising mailers like Time Warner, plans to close or consolidate mail processing facilities or mail processing functions, usually the outgoing mail, into large regional hubs spread sparsely throughout the country. In some cases, the mail will travel over 100 miles before coming back to the original town for delivery. The Postal Service acknowledges that First Class mail will be delayed as a result of the consolidations, but argues that alleged savings justify the reduction in service. The union has used the USPS’s own documents to show that there will be little if any savings.

This Friday, you have some celebrating to do, chummy. You must go out and take your favorite journalist to lunch, pat them on the back (or backside if you're into lawsuits) and buy them a libation. If you can find one, that is.... they are actually quite rare in the modern news business.

"The noble journalistic profession of muckraker emerged from the ooze on April 14, 1906, at the laying of the cornerstone for the House of Representatives Office Building, when President Theodore Roosevelt denounced it: "The men with the muck-rakes are often indispensable to the well-being of society; but only if they know when to stop raking the muck, and to look upward to the celestial crown above them, to the crown of worthy endeavor. There are beautiful things above and round about them; and if they gradually grow to feel that the whole world is nothing but muck, their power of usefulness is gone."

If we made the punishment for stealing military information by foreign nationals immediate execution, I doubt it would be as rampant.

The U.S. military said Tuesday that it was looking into reports that computer drives containing military data, some marked "secret," were available for as little as $20 in a bazaar outside its biggest base, and soldiers were visible making rounds there. But once they passed, at least two shopkeepers still offered memory drives for sale.

The Times first reported Monday that drives for sale at the bazaar contained documents marked "secret" and that they also listed the names and Social Security numbers of nearly 700 U.S. service members. In addition, they included discussions of U.S. efforts to "remove" or "marginalize" Afghan government officials whom the military considered "problem makers."

"Long Hair" David Fawver was finally offered a plea bargain by the Thurston County Prosecutor, to which he pleaded Monday before Judge Paula Casey.

The case stems from a misunderstanding in Sylvester Park in February of 2004, which resulted in charges being laid against Long Hair for assaulting one of three Washington State Troopers who confronted him. The alleged victim is Sgt. Michael Dahl, who heads the WSP's Capitol Campus unit.

Long Hair plead to two misdemeanor charges; Obstructing an officer and possession of an apparent weapon. The 6" bundle of sage Long Hair was using in his religious observance was taken to be a flaming plank by the frightened professional police officers, who attacked Long Hair by kicking him so hard he flew backwards onto the ground, where he was handcuffed. He was held in jail for about 24 hours, and released on his own recognizance. Then he was charged with a third degree felony.

Dr. Goodridge’s research group focuses on the development of verifiable on-farm Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) methods to control E. coli O157:H7 contamination in cattle, as a primary step in reducing the production of E. coli O157:H7 contaminated meat. Within this focus is a broad interest in the use of bacteriophages to control and detect bacterial pathogens in the animal environment. Specific projects include the use of phage therapy to reduce the amount of cattle that shed E. coli O157:H7 in their feces, and the development of rapid, reporter–bacteriophage, non-instrument based assays to detect cattle that actively shed E. coli O157:H7.
