Debrief, debrief, debrief. Any of us who participate in the Port protests need to remember to debrief. Even if we aren't personally pepper sprayed or injured.

Talk things over, tell the story of what you experienced. All your emotions are okay and you may feel some emotions only once you've gotten a chance to rest.

There were more fun and games down at the Port of Olympia today. Many arrests and a few pepper-spray-induced tears. I'll have some video up as soon as I edit it down (and get something to eat). I have to say, though, right from the top, that Port Security leaves a lot to be desired. As you'll see, the protestors were able to take the gate literally apart. Where's all that Homeland Secruity money going, I wonder?

If anyone else has video, post it on YouTube, and send me a link. I'll embed it on the blog for all to see.

Chew on this until I get the video posted.

OLYMPIA -- Twenty-two people were arrested today in one of the most volatile confrontations yet between anti-war activists and police officers guarding a military cargo ship docked at the Port of Olympia, the Thurston County Sheriff's Office reported.

It marked the most people arrested in one day since the demonstrations began a week ago against the military shipments leaving from the Port of Olympia's docks for Iraq. Police used pepper spray several times on the 100 or so activists and advanced into the crowd later in the evening, trying to disperse it.

Even Olympia City Councilman TJ Johnson was shoved by state troopers trying to clear the area. In response, he stood face-to-face in front of the advancing officers until they fired several pepper-spray bombs.

Information that every activist should have

  • PLAN AHEAD: For essential needs, care and supplies. Know what to expect. Know how to get assistance. Plan for how to re-contact your buddies if separated.
  • ATTITUDE: You are powerful. You can easily withstand most of what the police throw at you, and you are fighting for justice. Remember, pain is only temporary and we are extremely strong.
  • THE #1 WEAPON OF THE POLICE IS FEAR: Once you control that, pepper spray and other police tactics are easily manageable.
  • COMMON SENSE: Keep your wits, assess what is going down and what needs to be done.
  • BE CALM and FOCUSED when things get most intense. React to danger or warning signs sooner, not later. Watch for signs of physical and mental problems in yourself and others. Cool down others who exhibit panic behavior.
  • BEWARE OF RUMORS: They are usually false, and foster fear. Deal with the known truth.
  • DOCUMENT police actions, brutality, and injuries.

I wasn't sure if anyone had done this but I thought I would share. If you hop onto google and click the news section and search for "port of olympia" you'll see that Oly is national news. Suppose we aren't on nightline but hey, it's a start right?

Black Cross First Aid: Pepper Spray and Tear Gas

Good info on this site, including:

 During: How to deal

  • STAY CALM. Panicking increases the irritation. Breathe slowly and remember it is only temporary.
  • If you see it coming or get a warning (e.g. police are putting gasmasks on), put on protective gear. If able, try to move away or get upwind.
  • Blow your nose, rinse your mouth, cough and spit. Try not to swallow.
  • If you wear contacts, you must remove the lenses or get someone to remove them for you, with CLEAN, uncontaminated fingers. Destroy the lenses after exposure, they are not cleanable.
  • DO NOT RUB IT IN.

So the Washington State Military Department is "not a law enforcement agency." I'm glad they have taken the Posse Comitatus act seriously, but still I am left with a question: Why was a man detained by a homeland security agent two weeks ago, for a half hour, on the streets of downtown Olympia?

Whose tree should I bark up next?

take a look at the denial letter for yourself

    Strykers Protest Oly style

So I went to the strykers protest in olympia last night. For those who dont know what strykers are (and here Im assuming all my east coast pals) heres the rundown. Strykers are very lethal machines, kinda like hummers i think, that are being shipped from the port of oly to the war on iraq. So, being opposed to the iraq war, and for that matter war in all forms, i went down there.

When i got down there, a pretty sizeable crowd had gathered, but were in disarray because the cops PEPPER SPRAYED them because they were banging on the gate. Fucking pepper sprayed them. We reorganized and went to the other gate and started shaking it. I dont think this would have happened were the cops not to have used extremely excessive force against the protesters in the first place, but, regardless, the very fact that our port, in our town is being used for such a reprehensible war and the shipping of weapons designed to KILL PEOPLE, we had every right to make our extreme displeasure known.

Anyway, the pepper spraying continued, and let me tell you, if you have never seen this excessive force being used then you might not know what its like. I did not until now. people writhing on the ground, eyes red and watering, screams of intense pain.

Somehow in this melee, I got some residual on my hands and touched my lips. I was probably smoking a cigarette. I should quit, but thats neither here nor there. Pepper spray fucking BURNS. I was in intense pain, but chose not to use up the limited resources of cleaning agent as there were many people in worse pain than I. So, and heres where the story, in my mind, gets so rediculous its actually kind of funny, I went into a restaurant to wash off my lips. During this, some of the water splashed into my eye. With. The. Pepper. Spray. In. It. Ow. I let loose a scream of pain that was actually a prolonged "Fuck!" I had now felt the pain I had seen others writhing in. And it wasnt nice.

Anyway, that pain went away after a while and was replaced with what Im now dealing with- a raging headache and back pain that I think is my body reacting again to the chemical I breathed in. It hurts. Alot.

Basically I wrote this because I dont understand why the police would spray us. And Im not talking aboput the usual "gestapo capitalist pigs protecting their masters" shit I heard being shouted at them. We all know that, theres no need to wallow in it. I just dont get how human beings can do such things to one another over such abstracts as property damage (this was given as the rationalization by the police). It just makes no sense to me that they would cause such pain. It didnt help anything and just made the situation worse.

    Thats my rant. Eoin

Join the conversation about what is needed in Olympia outside of downtown.

"...Despite these bland improvements, my kid still loves Bigelow park. That whole neighborhood is one of the best in Olympia. It has a soul. I think it is largely because of its excellent residential destinations..."
