Last night at the General Government committee meeting, another topic brought up by Jodi Reng, library director for the Timberland system, was the possibility of placing a couple of library service kiosks around town. That would take pressure off of the downtown branch.

My initial thought would be to put kiosks in the two high schools in Olympia. Both are far enough from the downtown library to provide geographic diversity, and as you'll read below, I think there is something awfully cool about libraries and schools coming together.

Kiosks are basicaly mini-libraries that have been succesfully used throughout the system in non-library settings:

"The kiosk will provide Timberland Library services to both the Center’s students and Hawks Prairie area residents," said TRL Director, Jodi Reng. "Developed and designed by TRL’s Computer Services staff, the kiosk is the first stand-alone library services station to combine a library catalog and information computer with a self-checkout station. It’s efficient and economical," said Reng. The cost for the two-station kiosk was a little under $5,000.

Timberland library services available at the Kiosk

TRL cardholders can:

Place holds on Timberland library books and other library materials and request delivery to the Hawks Prairie Center.
Pick up and self-check out the materials that have arrived for them.
Return TRL materials in the book drop outside the Center’s main entrance.
Check their library card accounts, including the status of materials they have reserved.
Search the TRL catalog for books, DVDs, music and audio book CDs and cassettes, and more.
Search full-text magazine and newspaper articles and reliable reference resources.

I've been prostrate from the heat as of late and therefore I may come out as an ass, but my wife and I were down at the -- now more apropriately named than ever -- SLoP last night so she could ride her bike. The front part of the lake facing 5th was among the most egregiously human-fouled bunch of muck I've seen since I left Cal&^#%)@nia.

I lost track of Anna's post about a post-fair cleanup (hence my potential ass-like highjacking of her idea. Sorry Anna, the heat makes me stupider than usual), but I and trashbags will be down at the lake tomorrow afternoon, if not sooner. I'm totally open to ideas for a time, however. There was huge amounts of trash from the steps leading to the water on the east all the way to the mound by the spillway on the north.

Maybe I'm a day late and a dollar short, but that's what I'm planning to do tomorrow. I'm also going to try and devise something that I can throw out in to the water to get the floating stuff that I can't reach from the wall.

Caimans be damned!

DUBLIN (Reuters) - An Irish army officer in south Lebanon warned Israel six times that air strikes threatened the lives of U.N. observers there before four staff were killed in a direct hit, Ireland's Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.

"On six separate occasions he was in contact with the Israelis to warn them that their bombardment was endangering the lives of U.N. staff in South Lebanon," a Department of Foreign Affairs spokesman said.

"He warned: 'You have to address this problem or lives may be lost'," the spokesman said of comments by Lieutenant Colonel John Molloy, the chief liaison officer between U.N. forces in South Lebanon and the Israelis.

Funny that my first blog entry up here ends up being a lost and found notice... Anyway I found these on the corner of 5th and Cherry laid out on the sidewalk last Tuesday (7/18) afternoon.

Being a musician I know someone should be missing this stuff. If you know whose this might be drop a line... I'd be happy to get this back to the rightful owner even though the tunes are right down my alley.

BAGnewsNotes is a "progressive blog dedicated to the discussion and analysis of news images". Fascinating stuff.

I'm especially struck by the entries A Touching Man and A Touching Man, Part 2. Read through them, you will see what I mean, and participation on the blog is encouraged.

Then read this from ChronicBabe.com: The Question of the Day: May I Touch You? I know, I know, seems like an unusually big leap from a Prez who apparently cannot keep his hands to himself to the vent of an individual everyday citizen, but my post-overheated mind finds the connection.

Ask first.

What if everyone, from our Prez to the over-zealous and rude masseuse, asked first? Maybe if we all kept our hands off until we asked and got true permission, we would also then know when it is time for all hands on deck.
