Is there any truth to the rumor that the NSMers were staying at the Evergreen dorms? I heard that the employees of the cafeteria were forewarned, and instructed that they had to come into work that day. The school said they would provide escorts for employees to and from their cars if they were afraid. Is this true?

Jul 6 2006 - 5:05pm Jul 6 2006 - 7:00pm On Wed., Jul. 5, the Associated Press reported that the U.S. Army has filed three charges against First Lieutenant Ehren K. Watada: missing movement, contempt toward officials, and conduct unbecoming an officer. Supporters are planning to be at the Exit 119 overpass on I-5 at 5:00 p.m. on Thurs., Jul. 6, to make a strong show of support for Lt. Watada, who refused on Jun. 27 to obey an order to deploy to Iraq because he believes the war there is illegal.

I love these folks, I could write about them weekly. If you don't already know about them please read up and be inspired.
» The thought of the Westboro Baptist Church disrupting funerals with ugly hateful actions is something that I cannot fathom. The Patriot Guard Riders protect the grieving community and family as invited guests. The Riders display respect as they shield mourners from cruel interference. True heroes.

I ponder-blogged (pondering and blogging at the same time) on the question Why Olympia? back in early May and Rick's post on Nazis and architecture revives that train of thought for me.
» We already know that the NSM is particularly fond of the noise enhancing properties of the granite steps. The architecture as a whole apparently also triggers Nazi yearnings. But what about that dome? 287 feet, one of the largest domes in the world built without steel support. What is the power of the dome? Some of us respond by dedicating ourselves further to serving our community. Some of us are inspired, some of us go to work, some of us feel giddy as we gaze way up. Perhaps Nazis return to dome shapes instinctively, thinking they are after good photo ops, but really just craving the power of the dome. Maybe we can send them postcards of our dome so they won't feel so lonely and confused.

I was looking at the pictures on one of the Nazi's sites (David Pringle -- any relation to the potato chip guy?), when I finally got it (duh!) about why the NSM choose to meet at the Capitol building. It's the neo-classical architecture that they're drawn to because it allows them the pretend that there is some remnant of Das Dritte Reich still around.
» Hitler was wedded to the idea that architecture and ideology were tightly linked, and his plan was to completely rebuild Berlin in the huge, out-of-scale, nazi-classical style. This also explains why most of the pictures they took were away from the crowd, and toward the buildings. They staged the whole thing just as for an opportunity to take some photos!

i didn't experience fireworks everywhere in everyone's hands where i grew up, when last night came around i found it so eerie after dark. all of a sudden olympia became bagdad on invasion night but instead of being terrified or hiding in my house holding onto my partner, i was riding around on my bike and having a pretty good time watching fireworks when my partner said, "Fireworks sound like war and that's why people do them on the fourth of july." It made me shudder thinking about how every unfortunate place on earth goes through firebombings and battles but never here, and how truly priviledged (even in my poverty level working class life) i am. we live in a warlike culture not much different than the Romans and we are taught that power over others is okay throughout our lives.
» The night still remained sort of magical. Fireworks are still awesome. It's just something we thought about
