So I'm listening to NPR this afternoon, half a sleep, but I'm listening to this report on rebuilding a town in Mississippi. Pass Christian is the town, they were pretty much wiped out by Katrina. The Wal-Mart was destroyed. Wal-Mart is promising to return and the city officials are very excited. One of the things the mayor of Pass Christian said is the Wal-Mart might build a "Wal-Mart Villiage" This would be a standard Wal-Mart with housing, in this case condos on the floors above the main store. A proposed structure is pictured below:
» ![]() I'm wondering if Wal-Mart wants to come into Thurston County, or elsewhere in the Northwest, should we not, as part of the planning process, demand these so called "Wal-Mart Villages". I'm not certain if I would want to live in such a place, but I am certain it would be better than having yet another big box store in a sea of parking spaces. I commend the innovative thinking, even if there is a buck to be made by Wal-Mart. More than anything I would like these pseudo-Urban Layers type projects to be how all retail is incorporated into a community.

I stumbled across a very interesting website today. It's called Rapture Ready. It's where to go to get all of the latest information on the coming rapture. You can access the handy Rapture Index, "the prophetic speedometer of end-time activity".
» Also, don't be left behind without 'The Post Rapture Survival Guide'. It includes a step by step guide to the Rapture and the Tribulations, as well helpful tips such as: "You must build a supply of multiple vitamins with particular emphasis on anti-oxidants such as C and E and minerals. It will also be necessary to have a supply of disinfectants, particularly one that can be added to water to make it potable." There's so much more to this site, I couldn't possibly cover it all. So check it out for yourself. That's www.raptureready.com. See you there. Or, will I?

![]() Drew has managed to stealth up behind me twice now, while I'm out on the town, I haven't yet decided if this is a sign of me being unwisely oblivious or a sign of me finally being more relaxed and less hypervigilant. I'm reminded of the original Pink Panther movies: The Pink Panther is a series of American/British comedic films which feature the bumbling French police detective Jacques Clouseau. Especially: Cato is Clouseau's servant, and an expert in martial arts. It is unclear whether he believes Clouseau to be a great detective or whether he merely humors him. It is a running joke that he is instructed to attack Clouseau when he least expects it to keep Clouseau's combat skills and vigilance sharp. Some possible remedies include me taking to wearing sunglasses with discreet rear view mirror capabilities, stashing a gps tracker on Drew, or maybe inventing some sort of perimeter warning device that beeps when people get close. ![]()

Friend Marco has got 'imself published in the O, and a fierce debate is underway. Can we OlyBloggers do better? What do we make of this? I know we've been here before. I'm bringing this here to see if we can come up with some ideas for solving our shared problems without freaking each other out...
» Acts of sabotage don't qualify as terrorism During the last nine months, the FBI has been engaging in Operation Backfire: an intense effort to round up people suspected of "eco-terrorism" in the name of the Earth Liberation Front and Animal Liberation Front. The use of the term "terrorism" in this campaign has effects far outside the individual cases. Even though no one has ever been injured - much less killed - in any of these acts of sabotage, the Justice Department has insisted that the Earth Liberation Front is the most dangerous domestic terrorist group in America, and the agency has used broad powers and devoted tons of resources to arresting people associated with it. The act of burning SUVs and empty homes is extreme, but not terrorism. The rhetoric by the federal government serves a purpose. The Justice Department has focused on people's political beliefs - highlighting the ideological view of the individuals involved. This surely has a chilling effect on freedom of expression and could discourage people from engaging in legitimate political actions out of fear of being accused of "terrorism." Last May, the federal government celebrated the work of two Eugene police officers for their participation in Operation Backfire. This celebration occurred despite (or because of) the outcry from some civil liberty groups that the investigations and grand jury proceedings during Operation Backfire may contain civil liberty violations. This recognition shows how this administration feels about civil liberties: If police officers bend the Constitution, reward them; if citizens think differently from the state, punish them. |
