There are new policies in place at the Olympian! A valid email address is required to post comments, and personal attacks are now banned. I hopped on the comments today for the first time in a while, and was delighted to find people doing a good job of "playing the ball".
» Score one for decency! Score two for the exchange of ideas and opinions! Way to go Olympian!

Quickly and quietly, Air America has cancelled the Mike Malloy show. Mike Malloy was the best political commentator on the network. It's disenheartening, because Mike Malloy would discuss material that other commentators wouldn't touch. Air America should immediately reinstate his show!
Here is latest info from http://www.mikemalloy.com/

MIKE MALLOY FIRED BY AIR AMERICA RADIO
There will be no Mike Malloy program on Air America Radio as we have been terminated as of 8/30/06.
We are as shocked as you are, especially since as recently as last Tuesday we were told we had the go-ahead to announce our return to NY airwaves and that our contract was "on the way."
We are told its a financial decision.
More details to follow as we hear them ourselves. Members of the press can contact malloyproducer@aol.com to schedule interviews
Again, we will keep you updated as more details develop and thanks as always for your incredible support.

Earthquake rattles Western Washington on April 29, 1965. I know, because I was there. As I remember it, there was a light frost the morning of April 29th. Spring was in the air, but unbeknownst to us, there was also a major quake about to rattle our houses, schools, and our nerves. I was 14, and a freshman at

Great news! The Washington State Board of Pharmacy voted today to adopt new Washington Administrative Code that instructs pharmacists to fill legal prescriptions! No exception is made for the pharmacist's "conscience." Furthermore, the pharmacist "has a duty... to distribute drugs and devices approved by U.S. Food and Drug Administration for restricted distribution by pharmacies." You know what they're talking about there, right? Plan B! Furthermore, there is a clause stating the pharmacy must be in "good faith compliance with the existing stocking provision" that says the pharmacy must carry an assortment of drugs to meet the pharmaceutical needs of the population it serves. Why, what a strange coincidence! We've been having problems with exactly that here in Oly! I guess we'll have to see how the Pharmacy Board chooses to enforce "good faith compliance" in the near future!

"On my favorite June Madrona song, they sing, "Last night I dreamt that Portland filled up with gardens/and people on bicycles passing me by/and streets lined with fruit trees." June Madrona is Olympia's Ross Cowman, Onyx Dixon, and Christopher Schile turning guitar, voice, harp, and cello into careful, stately folk. It's nice. Like summer in Portland." -Portland Mercury xoxo ross -- bicyclerecords.com myspace.com/junemadrona

I pulled this excerpt from an LA Times legislative update column. I think this is a great step. The argument about candidates only going to cities may be true but it's not like in the past they've gone to very many places. This would make them have to campaign in more places, I believe, than the current system. Couple this with some campaign finance limits and we'll be on our way back to a real democracy again.
» Legislators pass a bill that could launch a national movement to elect the president by popular vote.
By Nancy Vogel, Times Staff Writer SACRAMENTO — Lawmakers sent Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger a bill Wednesday that would make California the first state to jump aboard a national movement to elect the president by popular vote. Under the legislation, California would grant its electoral votes to the nominee who gets the most votes nationwide — not the most votes in California. Get enough other states to do the same, backers of the bill say, and soon presidential candidates will have to campaign across the nation, not just in a few key "battleground" states such as Ohio and Michigan that can sway the Electoral College vote. "Frankly, the current system doesn't work," said Assemblyman Rick Keene (R-Chico), the only Republican to vote for the bill. "Presidential candidates don't bother to visit the largest state in the nation…. California is left out." If Schwarzenegger signs the bill — AB 2948 by Assemblyman Tom Umberg (D-Anaheim) — California will be the first state to embrace the "national popular vote" movement, though legislation is pending in five other states: New York, Illinois, Missouri, Colorado and Louisiana. The California legislation would not take effect until enough states passed such laws to make up a majority of the Electoral College votes — a minimum of 11 states, depending on population. The governor's office said Schwarzenegger has not taken a position on the bill.

Today we complete our exit, stage left. The Interstate wags impatiently and the floors have yet to be scrubbed. And my computer is still intact, our internet connection still live...the joys of technophilia.

I think moral questions are always interesting, so I'm curious as to what you as a juror would recommend in a case such as this. CNN: Officials: Dad kills neighbor accused of molesting girl: FAIRFIELD, Connecticut (AP) -- A lawyer climbed through a neighbor's bedroom window and stabbed him to death after being told by a family member that the man had molested his 2-year-old daughter, authorities say. The most I would ever agree to is parole. Other than that, he should be rewarded with community service hours. |
