I've been ragging on the sun for weeks and weeks on my radio show and I happy to say that its days are numbered. I am so happy autumn is arriving, like a ship heaving into port. I love having coffee when it is cool outside. I love warm coats and my near all-black wardrobe melding with the day's landscape. I love the rain and air and the bittersweet quality of it all. Autumn also means the Film Festival is coming up, and that makes me happy.
» Today is particularly lovely, and though it is sunny, it is cold and it is as if I can smell the ice off distant mountains on the air. I need to get off the computer and take a proper stroll now.

Starbucks "Pairs With" Annoying You is the article and my favorite web comment seen today is from timmus who asks:
» Doesn't it get really confusing if it appears that something pairs with pears?I've only experienced the "pairs with" phenomena once, and the barista did it so well I was not aware that it was a sales pitch. Most likely because he was busily complimenting me on my very excellent choice and I was enjoying being a particularly skilled consumer/sucker.

SEATTLE -- A former neo-Nazi told a jury Monday that he sold machine guns to a federal informant because he knew he'd be arrested and that his trial would provide a forum for challenging gun control laws - a claim that drew quiet chuckles from prosecutors.Story I seem to be on a roll today with this theme, suddenly it is most everywhere I look. I turned on the radio and KUOW had this story. KIRO has most recent update that I can find online. Story of the arrest of Keith Gilbert back in Feb. 2005 can be found through the Seattle P.I. A gun rights organization, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA) has issued a statement including: "For Gilbert to claim some kind of martyr status in this case is simply ludicrous," said CCRKBA Executive Director Joe Waldron. "His argument that he somehow engineered his arrest so that he could use his criminal trial as a forum to challenge gun control laws is not going to gain any traction at all with genuine firearms rights activists."

I've been goofing around with this site all morning (a sure sign that I have too much other work to do), and I think it might be something cool for OlyBlog. It has a chat function, but it also allows one to map important locations. For example, we could put the businesses that we like and want to support on the map, so they would be easy for everyone to find. I also like the way you can see a picture and place for the person that you're chatting with. Check it out here. Let me know what you think in the comments.

Story
» This news story fascinates me, first came across it through the SPLC hate watch e-newsletter. The police raided a Chicago firefighter's North Side apartment overnight and recovered more than 60 guns and a host of Nazi paraphernalia, authorities said today. Kozak would not give investigators the combination to safes containing the weapons, Franklin said, so firefighters helped break open one of his three safes.ATF gun dealer license info The article states that possibly the guns went to individuals in Michigan, so I pulled up a map of Michigan hate groups. Although of course, the people buying such weapons might not be formally allied with any specific group.

Be a part of a local effort to build citizenship and honor the creativity of our kids! For more info, or to volunteer, contact peacepledges@hotmail.com. What: Elementary school students design and create tiles to illustrate their personal pledges for peace in their families, their schools, their communities and the world. The tiles are installed for permanent display in a public setting (e.g., on the school grounds, along sidewalks, in parks, etc.). When: Between now and Thanksgiving break. How: Students will participate in a day-long curriculum designed to have them think about the impact they can have on those around them. Tiles, paint and other supplies will have been donated or bought and will be available on that day. As part of the curriculum, students will design and then create their own individual tiles, which will then be prepared and installed by community volunteers. Schools will have the option to provide space on school grounds for tiles from that school, or other locations will be found. Who: Opportunities are available for educators, parents, administrators and other interested folks. We need volunteers to solicit donations, locate potential installation sites, develop and deliver the curriculum, and manage the hands-on activity. We also need one representative for each school (preferably a parent or teacher) who will coordinate that school’s participation.
