Being left in charge of Olyblog (it's like having the keys to the city!), I am in a quandry...no blogsitting classes to be found. No guidelines, resources, help-lines. I'm on my own.  I wondered do I Let It Be, or do I put out an all call alert?

I'm going away from blogland for the weekend (banjo camp!), so I'm leaving the keys to the blog with V-ster. Everybody play nice while I'm gone!

Port kills contested garage plan - The Olympian

OLYMPIA - Port officials defused a brewing controversy Thursday by dropping the idea of building a parking garage behind Olympia Farmers Market.

For the past week, market managers had been giving leaflets to customers opposing a garage on grounds that construction could hurt business and that a multi-story garage was too large and out of character on the Olympia waterfront.

"We're very excited. We feel like they listened," said the market's general manager, Charley Haney. "A lot of people were upset about this."

She estimated the market had received about a thousand e-mails and phone calls this week in support of the market's opposition to a three-story garage behind its sales area. Market customers now park free on a surface lot behind the stores at Market Street Northeast and Capitol Way North.

"There has been an unfortunate communication breakdown between port staff and our important tenants and stakeholders regarding the proposed parking structure," Kennedy said. "Moving forward, we will do a better job of gathering input and sharing information with stakeholders and the community."

Much to like in proposed City Hall sites - The Olympian
The Olympia City Council has focused on a two-block area as the likely location for a new City Hall.

The two locations - the vacated Department of Transportation building on the corner of State Avenue and Adams Street, and a portion of a 17-acre parcel owned by the Port of Olympia near the intersection of Olympia Avenue and Jefferson Street - are solid choices. Each represents a political statement that city officials believe in downtown Olympia and are willing to invest millions of taxpayer dollars in the business district as a sign of support.
