While looking around for existent Web services which could prove beneficial for Olympia community, I stumbled upon one called Grouptivity. It seems that it could make time challenged collaboration amongst local activist groups easier.

I read in the Olympian today about Doug Mah's announcement of his intention to run for mayor, which wasn't a surprise. But I also noticed that two Thurston County Planning Commissioners (Craig Ottavelli and Rhenda Strub) announced they would be running for city council, with a third Planning Commissioner saying that she was considering running. I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about these people and why there would suddenly be a bunch of planning commissioners trying to get on the council.  It seemed sort of odd to me. Seems like this would be a great place to share any knowledge that any of us have about   the candidates.

As was expected and previously reported on Olyblog, Doug Mah will run for Position #1 in '07 with a Mark Foutch endorsement.  I realize it's a symbolic effort as he already occupies Position #6, but we all know how important symbolism can be!  Right out of the gate other endorsements include Ralph Osgood, the mayor of Tumwater and Virgil Clarkson, the mayor of Lacey (Yelm and Tenino mayors as well).  Also onboard are Reps. Hunt and Williams.  That's a pretty strong endorsement trail.  So much so that I wouldn't be surprised if he goes in unopposed...we'll see.

No word yet from Johnson or Ware.  The article in The Olympian suggested some seat maneuvering.  I suppose this is to find the best races and victory for Johnson and Ware.  Johnson won his last election - but not by a wide margin.  I don't think he's helped his status here in Olympia among undecided voters and may have even pushed away some support with his views and actions.

Rheda Strub, from the Thurston County Planning Commission, would also like a seat on Olympia's City Council.  Given the direction of Thurston County over the past several years, I wonder what the future of Olympia looks like if Johnson and Ware don't run or lose their seats.

SO CAL'S FAVORITE PARTY PUNK GIRL BAND, "ROCKET" HITS THE ROAD IN 2007

Several Dates Include Shows With Seattle's "The Lashes"

ECHO PARK, CA, January 8, 2007–"Hot new LA girl-band Rocket" (NME, October 2006) rang in the new year by announcing a west coast winter tour.

According to lead-singer Lauren, Rocket just couldn't wait any longer to hit the road: "we had the greatest time playing these cities on last summer's Warped Tour – we are literally counting the minutes until we can go back out."

Several dates are with Seattle power-poppers The Lashes (Red Ink / Columbia) and the tour concludes with a San Diego gig in support of Japanese dance-punks Polysics (Tofu Records) and The Outline (Fearless Records).

ABOUT ROCKET: Rocket is the launching pad for a new generation of pop music. The all-girl band mixes 60's girl group innocence with '70s decibel-damaging, Sunset boulevard beat and '80s glam wham swagger—a volatile combination that leaves one wondering what the results would be if the Shangri-La's crashed the stage during an early Motley Crue gig.

Rocket released their first album, "Too Hot to be Bothered" (Teenacide Records) in the summer of 2004. The follow-up EP, "Girls With Candy Hearts" (also on Teenacide) was released Valentine's day of 2006. Rocket toured from coast-to-coast during the summer of 2006 on the Van's Warped Tour, and has since supported national acts such as Rancid, OK Go, Morningwood, The Sounds and SuicideGirls.

Sure seems that way to me, but I never knew there was a "president's residence" anyway.

I was cruising the GA Surplus site this morning when I came across their real estate listings, which include some property in Olympia. Being a curious sort, I looked up what part of town it was.

Wow, pretty nice spot, I wonder how the state ended up with that?

Turns out (from Geomaps) its not only owned by Evergreen State College, its actually the President's residence.

Anyone want to buy Les Purce's house? Only $700k.

There are some interesting minutes here, noting a change in Purce's contract that says he doesn't need to live in the house. From another set of Trustee's minutes, it was because it didn't fit his family's needs:

Vice Chair Barnett said that the board met in executive session on March 15 to discuss the possible sale of real estate. She said that the board would not take any immediate action as a result of that discussion, but she provided a public report for the record. She said that the board had discussed the President’s Residence. When the Board hired the president, the Board required him to live in the residence for one year. The Board told him that when the year was up, the Board would be open to considering other arrangements, including providing the President with a housing allowance of equal value. The President has informed the Board that the location of the President's Residence is not suitable for his family’s current needs, and that he will want to move sometime this spring or summer. The Board asked the staff to begin developing options for the president's residence, including other uses for the college, a lease arrangement, or possibly a sale. The Board will consider those options at a future meeting.
