Have you noticed that, like clockwork, the Daily 0 has an article about the area’s unemployment rate each month? Okay, it’s not breaking news, but it is something that you can access directly for yourself, sans media filters. You can get jobless stats from the home page of WorkforceExplorer.com. Look for a headline that says something about the Current Employment Situation Report.” Since it’s just as important to know what the numbers don’t say, read up here.
Here’s the schedule of release dates for early 2007: January 16th, February 27th, March 20th, April 17th. There's a month lag between the data and the news release. Here’s the Daily 0’s coverage of this month’s release.

Found a copy of The Olympian from November 23, 2004. Of specific interest is the article on the big Port Commissioners meeting of 11-22-04, where two or three hundred people spoke out against the use of the port for military shipments, with only about ten people speaking in favor of them. (The Olympian, of course, titled the article "Public Split on Army's port use.")
» Click to view larger image: ![]() ![]() This was only a week after a large group of protesters cut a big hole in the port fence, forcing the Cape Intrepid to pick up and leave, with half its cargo on the quay. My two favorite parts: 1) This quote by Paul Telford: "I don't equate making these kinds of moral judgments with my job as a port commissioner." 2) The photo of Jeff "God Bless Israeli Bulldozers" Brigham giving us all the "Four more years" salute. Totally classic. :D

My family and I went down the Spar earlier tonight, and as a Olympian practically raised at the Spar, I have to say that the McMenamins down right saved the place. I'm of course saying that without having had breakfast there, but from dinner, it is saved.
» Don't expect anything from the old menu to be there. I opened the menu half expecting to see a Trailblazer burger or milkshakes. Not to be had. Though there is a rotating Blue Plate Special for $5. This week's is cajun mac and cheese. And beer. God bless the beer. We had the ESB on nitro. Oh yes. The inside is radically different. The tobacco counter of my youth, where my dad would buy pull tabs, is gone. They replaced it with some more booths and a cool alcove. The High Climber room is also gone, as far as I could tell they tore the wall down and put two pool tables back there. The seating on the right side of the restaurant is covered with a steel pergola. You have to see if for yourself. There are also several murals, one (about mid-way down the right side) depicting good old Alan McWain, who sold the Spar to the McMenamins. They also added several nice auburn light fixtures, which brings me to the coolest part of the Spar, the lighting. It is much dimmer in the new Spar, but not in the "they're mistaking darkness for ambiance" sort of way. They got it spot on. There was also a t.v. in the main eating area. By the time we were done with dinner, there were people standing by the door waiting for tables. Unlike the old Spar, where it was pretty much fend for yourself time, waitresses were helping sort out who was next and what tables were available. On the way home, my wife remarked that a lot of the changes were positive ones and that "the old owners should have done them themselves, it just made the place better." Which was true, the old owners could have done what the McMenamin brothers did, but sometimes you need an outsider to do what we never would have done.

Local artist/filmaker Devon Damonte is working on creating the Center for Direct Animation, based in Olympia. (Direct animation= drawing, painting, printing directly on the film itself.) The center will be a place where all kinds of people from around the country can come for retreats, learn this creative process, and produce their own experimental films. Devon has printed his entire business plan for the center on 16mm film! You can experience it on YouTube:
» If you want to view the (legible) paper version, you'll have to contact Devon. He is a graduate of the Enterprise for Equity business course.
