Karan, a blogger here in Olympia, has an intriguing post on what are called "widow-makers". I'm not going to quote anything from the original post, go check it out yourself: Widow-makers
» I will say that there are a lot of them out there. Spooky.

Rain is pouring and I'm weary and I'm loaded down with groceries and I'm looking forward to resting in the bus shelter at Harrison and Division on the west side and...........................the bench is gone.
» Gone. Disappeared. No more. Not a trace. The new shelter remains otherwise, fortunately, that is more than nothing and for this I am grateful. But I was really looking forward to simply sitting down. Resting. The bench is gone. And a new No Smoking sticker has appeared. Perhaps the two are related? Kidnap a bench and everyone stops smoking? This is a continuing saga. Most recent episode was written up 9/24/2006: Bus shelter at Harrison & Division removed again? I'd check with Intercity Transit, but truly, I don't have the heart. My educated guess is that they've been pressured once again by a local business. Perhaps not, perhaps there are other reasons, but I still believe that a bench would be lovely in that bus shelter that serves so many bus riders. Why don't we get to sit down? Did I miss the memo that declares that sitting is now a complicated rebellious act to be shunned? Folks, whoever you are, give us our bench back. Thank you.

What are you optimistic about?
» Over 160 people such as Dan Dennett, Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris and Michael Shermer answer that question. Great reading.

ESPN should be ashamed of itself.
» EDIT: Thank you Norm for showing us evidence that this was not an ESPN production. It was a very good imitation of ESPN's style, though it was in terrible taste. My assertion still stands that America is more entertained than the Roman Empire was, just in different ways. It is no longer OK to stage public battles between man and beast, but it's ok to do it with CGI on the TV or silver screen.

Hat tip to Glumbert.com for this little nature study. This is the kind of serious science that just doesn't get enough coverage. Click on the link above or the spider web picture for the whole story. Put your favorite caffeine drink down before watching the video clip.

Lee Rosenberg out of Seattle blogs as Thehim and he is writing about what he believes should be our state drug policy goals. I like what he has to say. And his plans are inspiring, his focus is on this current legislative session here in Olympia.
