Where did this term originate? I understand that disputes on this topic are pretty heated and some name-calling might become involved but does this seem petty to anyone else? Are pro-choice folk be called "anti-life" ? Maybe "pro-death"? Maybe I'm looking too deep into terms, but this seems kind of juvenile. Particularly among people who are trying to set an example. Of course this is coming from someone who is pro-gun. Maybe I need to start calling myself anti-life, or pro-suicide, or maybe pro-murder.

Jan 14 2007 - 3:30pm Jan 14 2007 - 5:00pm Anti-choice activists will once again be decending on Capitol Campus to garner media attention (and maybe some horn honks) for their oppressive, sexist cause. Come help plan some fun and innovative ways to confront this invasion of obnoxious (and potentially dangerous) bigotry. Sometimes the only way to keep an irritating spectacle from getting too much attention and spreading nasty ideas is to create a cooler, more attention grabbing spectacle! Your ideas are needed Sunday, January 14th, 3:30 pm The anti-choice rally by the way will be held on January 22nd

Jan 8 2007 - 7:00pm Jan 8 2007 - 11:00pm We gather together on the Monday nights in this small town that we call Olympia, at that sacred place known as The Brotherhood, to hear sounds played on instruments of string and metal. These strange folk talk of many things under the sky, a sky that may contain sun or rain -- or may be partly cloudy depending on whether there is an on-shore flow, but I digress -- and copiously and heartily quaff the suds of that wholesome drink we call beer. Join us for our merriment and you will leave with a tune in your heart and more than a few ideas in your head -- possibly contradictory ideas, but be that as it may -- and you shall not want for friends in this small town we call Olympia.

So, after being told to check out olyblog, I immediately did so...thanks to the encouragement of Liz from BRAC.
» Today was my first day of training for interning with BRAC. I think I'm still a bit anxious about this whole thing, yet at the same time I'm super excited. I originally wanted to intern for more than one quarter but then I started thinking of other places I'd like to intern with! 1. BRAC 2. Carenet Pregnancy Center 3. WROC In my 5 quarters left at TESC hopefully I can fit all three in! Count down to 21: 40 days

The Olympian has a story this morning about a recent death at the Thurston County Jail: DUI suspect found hanged inside jail. (Note from Norm: EDIT: I would add, for your own well-being, if you read the article, do not click on the remarks link.) Results of police investigation and coroner's report are not yet in. So we don't know for certain that this was a suicide. At the moment I'm going on the assumption that it was.
» The Seattle Weekly awhile back ran excellent articles on suicides at the King County jail: Dead-End Jail and Unreported Jail Deaths. And the National Institute of Corrections has an extensive library of related resources available online. But until the investigation and coroner reports are in, and most likely even after that, many questions remain. As I read the article I had immediate questions such as: Why was there a cord of any sort anywhere near this man? But really, I don't have a clue, I wasn't present, I don't work there, this is not my field. And my guess is that no matter how trained and prepared and vigilant staff may be, if an inmate wants to die, they can find a way. Condolences to Mr. Spears' family and friends and community. Community includes people who work at the jail. This cannot be easy for anyone. |
