Radical Caring Network Party and Workshops 6pm-8pm Oct 23rd, 2007 Main room of the Olympia Free School!

Hands on workshops as you Learn how to DIY publish as a team and enjoy it as we sort, staple, hand paint the cover and prepare to increase the circulation of ‘Natural Learning’ farther than ever before! Help make ‘Freeschool’ a movement and not just a place! Olympia Freeschool’s newsletter! It is not required, but it would greatly help if each person could print out 10, 15 or 100 copies of Natural Learning, found as a PDF booklet by clicking on “Natural Learning”, when visiting http://www.RadicalCaring.org or when visiting http://www.olympiafreeschool.org. For every 100 black and white copies printed out (or for every 50 color copies printed out) we offer a free business card size ad space in the next issue of Natural Learning.

If you do not want the free ad space, we can also offer you a tax-deductible receipt to cover the value of the printed copies.

We know some of you have access to free printers! Contact the outreach volunteer for more info: olyfreeschool ‘atsymbol’ himom.org - For more info and printable flyers go to www.RadicalCaring.org and click on ‘Calendar’

Friday, October 12, 10:30 am–noon, 1–2 pm

outside Planned Parenthood at the corner of Legion Way and Adams Street in downtown Olympia

Come out and show your support for birth control. Anti-choice demonstrators are trying to discourage people from utilizing the services of Planned Parenthood with grisly signs and a constant presence during their 40-day vigil. Let’s send a positive message to the community about the medically accurate information about sexuality and birth control provided by Planned Parenthood. Don’t let the “pro-lifers” turn back the clock on choice!

(thank you Works in Progress for event information)

TODAY!

I will be offering a class called Talking with Toddlers at the Freeschool beginning next Thursday. From the Freeschool website:

This class is designed to help families learn to communicate with children who are just beginning to develop expressive language. Language development is crucial for social, emotional, and cognitive growth. When children experience delay, they are more likely to have difficulty with other language-based activities such as reading and writing. This class will help children get on track, and shorten the amount of time that they spend with little or no way to express themselves.

You can register online for the class here.

Drove by 116 4th Ave on my way to Music 6000 yesterday and was disgusted. Disgusted that employees had to use 10 foot long paint rollers to roll out pale yellow paint after some dumbass decided to graffiti up the wall. Pathetic.

How come you never see folks rolling out fresh new paint on The Reef's nice, red, graffiti-less walls?

From today's Olympian editorial:

A Thurston County shooting review board consisting of law enforcement officers found no fault with Nelson’s decision to use deadly force against Moniz. Nelson fired three gunshots into Moniz as the suspect sat behind the wheel of his vehicle with four blown-out tires on a dirt road near Steamboat Island following a high-speed chase. Also inside the vehicle were Moniz’s 17-year-old fiancee and their nine-month-old son.

The board concurred with Nelson’s claim that Moniz, who was unarmed, was using his vehicle as a weapon, which justified Nelson’s split-second decision to fire at Moniz.

Colleagues of Nelson from the law enforcement community have ruled in his favor, and the Thurston County Prosecutor’s Office has chosen not to file charges.

That said, it’s still appropriate for a jury of Nelson’s peers outside of law enforcement to review the evidence.

An inquest by Warnock would remove any shadow of doubt over whether or not justice has been served.

As I've written on another blog, The Olympian is quick to judge the performance of others in their work and this is a perfect example.  Read carefully and know that between the lines the editor is saying "I have a problem with police investigating the actions of a police officer".

I'll be the first to say that police officers are human, thus can be wrong or biased on any issue.  My question is, who is better equipped to make a decision on a law enforcement issue than a law enforcement officer?

I'm not sure that, in the heat of battle, feeling threatened by a man driving a 2,000 pound weapon, that I would not have taken the same action and I'm not even a gun owner.  But I digress from the real issue of this blog.

First: I thought that this was olyblog, about hyper local reporting… Not the complaints forum of The Olympian’s comment forum.

Second: If you have an issue with Olympian, address The Olympian.

Third: The people administering the web-content of The Olympian are employees doing their job, they are human. Don’t reduce your annoying discourse to dehumanizing remarks on how you perceive their character based on your issues with their (being the companies) forum.

This brings me to this point. Because, at this point as an Olyblogger, it begs to be asked; in all seriousness. Because, frankly things like Olyblog exist, because they don’t want to be like the local media…

Who cares what the Olympian "comments" forum is doing? It is a comment section of a newspaper. What ever happened to addressing concerns with editorial content in writing to the paper? Or is it, that some have nothing better to do with their lives, than cause arguments online about trivial issues.

Here’s a suggestion or two:

A. If you see an error in The Olympian, correct it and mail it to them, they have a section in the paper for errors and omissions.

B. If you don’t like the editorial stance of the paper, write a section editor, or the paper’s parent company.

C. If you don’t like what the City of Olympia, the City Council, or any elected official is doing try writing an editorial, that will get published; go to council meetings and voice concerns; or write said official.

Point is the only people who read the comments section of the online edition of the paper are the same type who post on them ad nauseam and start flame wars about unrelated topics.
