The following anecdote didn't really happen. Last night, while walking downtown I asked a gentleman if he had the time. He took one look at my appearance and incorrectly assumed I was a member of the hated homeless population. I was informed that he didn't have time to be wasting time telling people who've run out of time what time it was. He claimed he didn't have any extra time yet it was obvious he had time on his hands. I felt like less of a person while watching him continue unimpeded down the sidewalk like he had all the time in the world. He then took the time to write an angry email to the Olympia City Council, a venomous letter to the Daily Olympian, a smug blog on Blogspot, and a schedule for the weekend. When I had my own pocketwatch I wasn't stingy at all with my time. I gave my time freely and never expected my beneficiaries to reciprocate. Then the big recession hit. Now I realized, as I briefly sat on the cold sidewalk to tie my laces, that I was completely out of time I counted my last few seconds and wondered if I could just have a few free moments in Le Voyeur or Eastside or the Clipper where a show was going on. But for the past few months the buzz on the streets is that the Council, Business Owners and Police of Olympia have shouted out Last Call and that we're quickly approaching Closing Time.

From DKosopdedia:
» Here are a few quotes from the great man: "I have flown twice over Mt St. Helens out on our west coast. I'm not a scientist and I don't know the figures, but I have a suspicion that that one little mountain has probably released more sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere of the world than has been released in the last ten years of automobile driving or things of that kind that people are so concerned about."
"Trees cause more pollution than automobiles do." "All the waste in a year from a nuclear power plant can be stored under a desk." "You know, if I listened to him [Michael Dukakis] long enough, I would be convinced we're in an economic downturn and people are homeless and going without food and medical attention and that we've got to do something about the unemployed." "The Afghan Mujaheddin are the moral equivalent of the Founding Fathers of America."
"The United Sates has much to offer the third world war."
"You know, your nose looks just like Danny Thomas's."
"In England, if a criminal carried a gun, even though he didn't use it, he was not tried for burglary or theft or whatever he was doing. He was tried for first degree murder and hung if he was found guilty"

Olympia sidewalk ordinance takes effect today (Olympian 1-31-07)
"A controversial ordinance that regulates behavior on sidewalks in downtown Olympia goes into effect today. The Pedestrian Interference Ordinance makes it illegal to sit, lie down, sell things or ask for money within 6 feet of a building downtown, with some exceptions. Sitting and lying will be allowed between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m., and street performers will be permitted in designated areas. Violators could be charged with a misdemeanor and could pay up to $1,000 or spend 90 days in jail. Opponents have said the rule would unfairly target the homeless, driving them away from business overhangs and out into the elements. Supporters counter that the rule is aimed at bad behavior, not the homeless..."

Last month (January 2007) the Washington State Department of Ecology (Ecology) released its National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Phase II permits, which cover small municipalities such as Olympia and Lacey. These permits are intended to regulate the sources of pollutants that discharge into ground or surface water. Stormwater is one such source of pollutants.
» Stormwater is the water from precipitation that falls on human-altered environments (roofs, lawns, sidewalks, roads, etc.) collecting the toxic pollutants, sediment, harmful bacteria, or habitat damaging nutrients found therein and flows downhill to contaminate a local stream or shoreline. In addition to pollution, stormwater can further cause habitat degradation through flooding and erosion. In natural environments stormwater is not a problem because an “undeveloped” ecosystem retains virtually all (over 99% according to the Puget Sound Action Team) of the water it receives. With “development”, however, come large increases in impervious surface cover, which prevents water from infiltrating into the ground and adds a whole array of toxic substances to be soaked up by the runoff. Therefore, the problem of stormwater is really a problem of development.

Superb article I dug up thru a back-link from New Zealand's Anarchist Forums. Kudos to Kakariki at BlogGreen! This article was first published in The State Adversary (Aotearoa Anarchist Mag, Winter 1996
" This is a rant born of my frustration, some of these views are personal – no apologies. It seems anarchists in general consider that children suck and people who have them are boring dickheads. It is quite acceptable in anarchist circles to slag off children in a way that would be condemned if it were any other group. Jokes about mutilating babies generally find favour. So do jibes about people who chose to stay home with children “not having a life” or “selling-out”. Comments such as “Oh God, I would never have children” are delivered with a scoffing snideness. I’m sure most of my readers are in amused agreement about my observations so far. Before you get too comfortable I have a few revelations about the origin and implications of the anti-child view. Firstly, being anti-children and anti-parenthood is not rebellious or unique. It seems many anarchists express these views as part of a rejection of the parents values. Just because you can’t understand your parents doesn’t mean the values of any person choosing to become a parent are incomprehensible. As anarchists we have many criticisms of mainstream society, including such concepts as “family values”. However, dismissing children and parents all together is throwing out the baby with the bath water. There is nothing unique about having no respect for children or parents. This is not only the attitude of many anarchists, but of New Zealand capitalist society. Children, like any other unwanted minority are institutionalised – in their case in schools. There is no place for children and babies in a capitalist society. Buses and public transport are difficult to use with babies and children. Cities and buildings are designed for adults, children are seldom considered. Many people object to women breast-feeding in public. Babies and children are not welcome in workplaces. What’s more, babies take women out of the work force, where capitalism wants them, because women are cheap to employ. Women also look nice round the office and besides, who else would do some of the work that women do? |
