Okay...

So I was a little nervous. It was difficult to face the very people who have been irritating me lately. I restrained my frustrations, but there were times when I wanted to shout at them.

I didn't...

I was civil...

I was sticking up for people I don't personally know: property owners who are having their lands forced from them by that same Council's abuse of the Emminent Domain laws.

I was nervous, and it showed.

However, during the time to respond to the Public, not a single one of them mentioned my concern. This means one of two things: (a) I was incomprehensible, or (b) I was right, and they knew it.

Either way, I shall have to bring it up again next week.

Whomever was there, or saw it on channel 3, please comment on my little diatribe.

Thanks.

Nineteen statements toward uses for, and understandings of, Camp Quixote and its detractors from The Phantom Languaging Wing of the Olympia Perturbers' Guild

  1. What all opponents and supporters of Camp Quixote understand is that the Poor People's Union is designing and attempting freedoms that almost no one has.
  2. The opponents who are cynical want these freedoms prohibited unconditionally.
  3. The opponents who are hopeful want new freedoms prohibited until everyone gets them at the same time.

The Welfare Rights Organizing Coalition, which organized Monday’s event, said benefits for 72 families will be eliminated in March, and as many as 1,269 more families in six months.

According to the Office of Financial Management, the number of families that could be affected is between 300 and 600.

Members of the welfare rights coalition said they didn’t expect to prevent the new cutoff policy. But they hoped their stories would aid lawmakers trying to increase support for the poor.

Among such bills being considered is SB 6016. It would allow welfare mothers of children younger than 1 to forgo the 20 hours a week of training and volunteering required of Workfirst participants.

“Children who feel safe and secure with their parents are able to go on and succeed in school,” said the bill’s sponsor, Sen. Debbie Regala, D-Tacoma.

Ian says:

Greetings all,

I have some unfortunate news.  Yesterday, February 15th, while passing out flyers (containing important questions to consider before enlisting in the military) in front of an Army recruiting table at the Western Washington University Career Fair, our good friend Karim Ahmath was arrested by the WWU campus police.  They charged him with disorderly conduct, citing his argument with one of the Army recruiters as the reason for the arrest.

However, I witnessed the whole thing, and although there was definitely a heated argument, I and others feel the arrest was unjust.  At no time did anyone in charge of the Career Fair ask Karim or any of us passing out flyers to leave the event.  At no time did Karim engage in physical contact with the recruiters or the police (except when the police put his arm behind his back, forced him out of the building, and later handcuffed him).  In addition, I feel that Karim, who is Asian American, was racially profiled.  Specifically, I feel he was profiled by the military recruiters, as they are the ones who requested the police remove Karim.  My reasoning for this claim is that at least 5 or 6 other students were engaged in handing out the same flyers in front of the Army and Navy recruiting tables.  Some of us were also engaged in verbal disagreements with the recruiters.  One of us was even engaged in a shouting match with one of the Navy recruiters.  But, the recruiters did not request police intervention for any of the rest of us.  As you may have guessed, everyone of us, except Karim, is white.
