Harlan Zinck will read a wide array of classic short stories. Zinck's radio-announcer's voice and deep understanding of the stories bring the works to life in a dramatic and engaging way. Tea and cookies will be served.

When I left the Evergreen basketball double header last Saturday I was under the impression that our trip to the playoffs was merely a one-and-done. Not so (via email):

GEODUCKS WIN PLAYOFF OPENER!

Seeded eighth -- and last -- in the Cascade Collegiate Conference tournament, Evergreen's men's basketball team bounced back from a 12-point deficit during the second half at Danny Miles Court in Klamath Falls (a building no Evergreen men's team had ever previously won in!) and toppled the NAIA's sixth-ranked team, Oregon Tech, 89-83, Wednesday night.  The victory -- Evergreen's first CCC playoff win on the road -- sends...

EVERGREEN to #4 WARNER PACIFIC COLLEGE
Portland, Saturday, February 24, 7:30 p.m. for a
Cascade Collegiate Conference Semi-Final

Warner Pacific is located at 68th and Division in northeast Portland.  The gym is very small, so plan to arrive early to support the Geoducks.  Warner's egular season ticket prices were: General Admission $5.00 Students grades K-12 $3.00. Students from other Colleges w/ ID $3.00 without ID $5.00.  May be slightly higher for the CCC playoffs.
In the world of small college basketball in the Northwest, OIT is a legendary program. Their coach, Danny Miles, has been there for almost 40 years and has won an insane 800 or so games in that time.

From the Klamath Falls paper, which covered the game:

“They really didn't do anything different in the second half, they just came out like it was all-or-nothing,” Hesia said of the Geoducks, who had just seven players in uniform Wednesday night.

“They've had so much dissension this season that you never knew who'd show up,” Miles said of ESC, a team that lost six league games by six or fewer points, three of which were one-point decisions

To say that stories like this are revolting is an extremely inadequate way to describe my feelings about it.  How can the U.S. justify any international military actions when things like this happen?  I expect people to defend the abusers of this by saying this is an exceptional event and not representative of our military but if human beings come out of the military and behave in this way, there is something deeply wrong with the culture of the military.

Soldier breaks down during graphic account of girl's rape
By Andrew Gumbel in Los Angeles
Published: 22 February 2007

A US soldier being court-martialled for raping a 14-year-old Iraqi girl and killing her family last March broke down in tears yesterday as he gave a graphic account of the unprovoked attack.

Sgt Paul Cortez, one of five men facing criminal charges for the atrocity, described how he and his comrades discussed "having sex with an Iraqi female" and then selected their target in such a way as to minimise getting caught.

He, James Barker and Steven Green had their eye on a farmhouse near their checkpoint in Mahmudiya, near Baghdad. They visited it before the attack and behaved so lasciviously around Abeer Qasim al-Janabi that she was sent to sleep at a neighbour's house. They made their move in broad daylight, when Abeer's parents and five-year-old sister were also home. Cortez told the court that Green took the three into a bedroom while Cortez and Barker took turns raping Abeer in the living room.

"She kept trying to keep her legs closed and saying stuff in Arabic," Cortez said. "During the time me and Barker were raping Abeer, I heard gunshots that came from the bedroom. After Barker was done, Green came out and said that he had killed them all... Green then placed himself between Abeer's legs to rape her."

Wow.

Orcinus often blows me away and has done so again this morning. In Sara Robinson's post Why Protests Don't Work......And Why They Do she muses on Protesting 101 by Barbara O'Brien at Mahablog.

The six basic rules for demonstrations discussed are:

1. Be Serious.
2. Be unified of purpose.
3. Good protesting is good PR.
4. Size matters.
5. Be sure your opposition is uglier/more hateful/snottier than you are.
6. Demonstrations are not enough.

Check out the comments too, the authors join in.

Date: Sunday, Feb 25th, 2007

Event: "Community Building Convergence and Potluck"
Price: Free of Charge

Location: Olympia, 711 State Avenue, 2nd floor, Goldberg Room. (Google Map http://tinyurl.com/4ga85

Wheelchair accessible and children are very welcome.

This event is completely free of charge. If you are interested in building and living in ecovillages, housing co-ops, landtrusts, affordable student housing, educational housing, hostels or any type of shared housing group, please join us at this event! You are encouraged to bring your ideas and proposals regarding building a new community. We also greatly welcome those who are just curious or interested in living in a community and planning the creation of a community. Thank you. Contact us through the email list on our website and sign up on the email list to find out more information about events which are happening before then.

If you are in an activist or community group and would like to make a 10
minute presentation just show up (and give one starting at 3pm though the event starts at 1pm). We have the room reserved until 5pm
so if folks want to talk further after the group is gone at 3:30 that is
fine and some of us are always willing to stay later.

It is a Potluck style meeting. Open to all. As we are an ecovillage
group, please bring your own cups, silverware and plates to cut down
on disposable plates/utensils. This will also cut down on dishwashing
for others.

Bring fruits (grapes, tangerines, oranges, etc), vegetables (cherry
tomatoes, etc.,) chips or hummus (always popular) if you have no idea what to bring. If you bring a prepared dish be certain to list ingredients especially if dairy  (including butter, eggs, etc.,) or peanuts were used on
an index card or small sheet of paper due to dietary restrictions and allergies.  Place your name on the index card so we can thank everyone who contributed to the Potluck meal.  Tghis is important as we had over 20 people at our January event who helped make this a wonderful event.

Susan, an Olympia Ecovillage member has generously volunteered to bring coffee for everyone.
