The Trouble With Unicorns is a 30-minute short about a unicorn named Morgan who leaves his happy home and finds himself in Factoryland. He begins dating a stripper that his boss is in love with and after an epic battle, he decides to leave. He then tries his luck in Fantasyland, and ends up alone in the desert deciding whether to kill himself or join the circus.I've come across various mysterious doings in our Olympia downtown alleys from time to time, including what appeared to be a movie being filmed. Perhaps I'd caught sight of these folks, The Trouble With Unicorns cast and crew, scouting locations, (shooting taking place in Olympia, Tacoma, and Seattle) and engaging in other movie making activity. Their production blog is worth following. I'm especially fond of a priority list as written by the writer/director because it reads to me as great advice for life itself: 1) We are here to learn first and foremost. We are here to make mistakes, take responsibility for our mistakes, figure out how we made them, write them down so we don't have to make them in the future.

Due to that which is my life I was only able to attend the Open Mic portion of the second West Side Artswalk. Due to memory card constraints I was only able to record a limited number of performers and performances. Even without being able to see and/or do much, I had a wonderful time and I fully recommend everyone attend future Raccoon Collective Artswalks. I submit for your aural pleasure one performance, and encourage you to go to the Raccoon Collective's Blog to watch others.

Last night I was singing "Down By The Old Mill Stream" and while doing so I noticed that a guinea pig in the next room raised her little head and froze in a catatonic state during my entire rendition. Frozen as if in a trance. Not moving at all. As soon as I stopped, the little creature ran terrified into a hidey hole-- just like in a cartoon, slightly levitating in the air with her tiny feet moving rapidly, then landing on the floor and instantly zipping away while leaving a little cloud of guinea pig dust. So, if Olympia is in danger of being invaded by a wave of malicious guinea pigs, give me a microphone with big speakers and I can have my moment of glory. I have been called the 2nd worst singer in the world. My friend Jim, a longshoreman, is actually the worst. Imagine the horrific vast power we could unleash while performing a duet of Carpenters' songs.

The PeaceGuard Northwest is sending a small group of street medics to the G8 Conference in Heiligendamm, Germany June 6th, 2007 to June 8th, 2007 and we need your help. We are asking that our supporters help sponsor us in this endeavor. Also during the months of June through September 10th Mr. Hays will be going to Mexico and several islands in the Caribbean conducting audio/video interviews concerning the influence of the G8 upon that region. This is an expensive and dangerous endeavor and one that is vitally important. These interviews will be shared with many activists groups at home and abroad and will help expand our knowledge of how the G8 and our own actions are impacting the world. If you want to help sponsor this trip or are part of a group who may be able to help do so please respond by email with your contact information if you plan on making a contribution to peaceguard@replacementsneeded.com

A very special person, whom I was proud to call a friend, died last weekend. I met Jo Jenner at a discussion group we call The Salon in late 1992. She had recently lost her husband, Julian, and was spreading out a little into the community. I was struck, at the time, by her dignity and her sadness.
» The Olympian had a very nice article about her impact on the community of artists in town and an obituary (link to search: search for 'jenner') with an excellent photo and details about her life that were new to me. She was a generous, intelligent, sensitive, strong, and creative woman. The obituary has a story about her that gets to some of the kind of person she was, showing her sense of justice and her sense of humor: Mr. Jenner's banking career led to a four-year posting in Hong Kong for the National Bank of Commerce in 1967, and Jo worked as a volunteer for several years with the Family Planning Council there. Her creation of a promotional poster featuring a pregnant man earned international media attention.I hope that I am as creative, connected, and committed as Jo was when I’m her age. We’ll miss you, Jo. Cross-posted at Peregrinate.

Olympia, Washington – The Poor People’s Union (PPU) won a standoff with city officials last month. Despite ongoing objections, the PPU won the right to reestablish the tent city, Camp Quixote, on a new site. According to one of the organizers of Camp Quixote, Rob Richards, “This is a major victory. We get to stay together. We get a place for now, and dialogue has been opened for a permanent site. We developed leadership, organization, and a plan. Now we’re getting ready for what comes next.
