Hi, guys! Please preserve my anonymity. But I need advice. Okay, here's the situation: I have a really nice boyfriend. We have been going out for two years. He's divorced, and I have never been married, although I lived with someone for a while. He and I don't live together, but we have an exclusive relationship, and maybe we'll move in together at some point. But right now we have a problem. See, he had a vasectomy back when he was married. That's okay, because I don't want kids. And it's great not having to fuss with birth control! STDs aren't a concern, since we're both uninfected, and we don't have sex with other people. But I always carry condoms with me in my purse; I have been doing this since before I was even sexually active. My boyfriend has a problem with this. He says that since we don't need to use them, and we have an exclusive relationship, I shouldn't need condoms, and the fact that I always carry them around signifies a lack of commitment to our exclusivity agreement. I totally disagree with this. I just think it's smart to have condoms available, just in case. Also, my friends know that I am always supplied, and sometimes I have ended up giving condoms to other people -- who knows, I may have prevented an STD or an unwanted pregnancy! He says that this longtime habit of mine is undermining his trust in me. I have never broken our exclusivity arrangement and don't intend to. I think I am trustworthy. Do you think he is being unreasonable, or should I toss the condoms? Signed, Trojan Source Trojan Source: You are right; you should carry condoms if you want, and it ought not reflect on your trustworthiness. For some reason this is a problem for your partner and this is too bad because it sounds like it has benefited others. But, he does have a problem with this behavior, and if one person in a relationship has a problem, it’s a community problem. So, you’re right, but what is that worth? This issue is probably not worth damaging your relationship over, but that is ultimately for you to decide. Unless this issue emerged within a pattern of manipulation or trust is a reoccurring theme in your relationship, you should concede. “A wise [person] thinks it more advantageous not to join the battle than to win.” - François de la Rochefoucauld I seek romance. Now, after a lack of interests, suddenly there are multiple interests. The current plan is to go with the flow and play it by ear, being especially careful not to rush anything. Of course, I am impatient somewhat, due to the dry spell. Please advise. Until Ruin:

I love Marmite, yes I do
» Yes I do I love Marmite, yes I do Yes I do It might change the color of my poo But I love Marmite Yes I Do! (the family song [by the guys only] on this marvelous product) My brother recently gave me a large jar of Marmite after he returned from a trip to England. If you have never tried it, I can tell you it is one of those things you either love or hate. Also, does anyone know where Marmite can be purchased in the Olympia area? I understand the westside Safeway carried it for awhile, but I don't see any there now. Also, Marmite hurts no one, unlike using Mrs. Butterworth. ![]()

Interesting article in Yahoo News today about global warming.
» There are a couple of main points. One of the points is illustrated by referring to the children's book: "The King, the Mice and the Cheese," by Nancy and Eric Gurney. This is a cautionary tale about a king who is overrun by mice who are after his cheese. He brings in cats and soon is overrun by cats. He brings dogs to deal with the cats and so on. And that really captures the problem of weather engineering and goes to the earlier question about whether catalytic convertors are the cause of the current global warming crisis. Catalytic convertors really are not the cause of our global climate problems any more than cats are the cause of the King's progression of worries from the story. The second point is that when the scientists start coming up with technological solutions to population and consumption challenges, we should probably assume that unless we are really lucky these technological solutions are cats to mice, or dogs to cats. Our really complex and dynamic global weather system seems to go through a regular cycle of ice ages, but instead of going all the way down that path into a deeply frozen state like another small blue planet - Neptune - our ice ages back off and the planet warms. Global climate is something that develops over millions (or billions?) of years. I suspect that there is a certain equilibrium on this small blue planet and thank goodness for that. Unlike our neighbor Neptune, somehow this lovely planet starts to warm up as it get a winter coat of ice and snow. Part of it has something to do with the reflectivity of the ice and snow, not absorbing the light - heat rays of the sun. I can almost wrap my mind around how the brakes automatically start slowing down an ice age through the reflectivity issue, but I would bet that the dynamics that keep this small blue planet from becoming a small white and really cold planet are much more complicated than the simple reflectivity factor of ice and snow. It is reassuring to know that the planet has some equilibrium and self control on the low end of the temperature scale.

as many of you know, four years ago olympia citizen rachel corrie was was brutally murdered in the gaza strip by two israeli soldiers following orders.
» i had the opportunity yesterday to see my friend mohammed abu asaker from rafah who was a friend of rachel's. mohammed was here in town to participate in the events on friday. rachel's parents and mohammed met with the mayor as well as several city council members to promote an official sister city relationship between olympia and rafah, the city where rachel died. rachel's parents told me that the meeting with the mayor seemed to go well, and that everyone on the city council was very supportive of the idea, but that they anticipated some tough opposition to the idea from a few vocal and organized anti-palestinian extremists here in olympia. it's really moving to hear about everything the people of rafah have done to remember rachel. there is a street named after her, families have named their children after her, and everyone there knows her story. i know that we olympians remember why rachel went to rafah as well, and that we can overcome the opposition of a few in our community who would like us to forget. here's a link to the sister cities project web-site with information on what you can do to support the official sister city proposal: http://orscp.org/olympia/?p=157 the most important thing right now is to write to citycouncil@ci.olympia.wa.us and tell them you support an official sister-city relationship with rafah. here are some other useful links: olympia rafah sister city project

In light of the recent difficulty finding a local city council member I have come up with an easy and cheap solution.
» Some would recommend tracking chips and GPS. I think we can be far more budget minded than this. What is needed is a simple and cheap application of an old technology: bells. We attach bells to all public officials. We do this to all elected officials, all bureaucrats, and all police. The easiest way to accomplish this would be by attaching the bells via a bell-collar system available at certain common specialty shops. This system is both cheap and serves utility well; thus getting the job done vis-à-vis accountability. I think all can agree this is a necessary step toward public accountability; everyone who loves America that is. |
