Hiya All--

...was listening to the NPR show, and they mentioned costs going up on gas (auto fuel); three bucks or whatever.

I wonder what would happen in the US if the price per gallon was around $6-$12 a gallon, heck even $5 per gallon...what are the real costs of auto fuel?

Would there be a food shortage?

Would most folks still be able to afford to drive for themselves?

Remember that the auto is a recent fad; what is next?

Would folks bicycle to work?

Most folks worldwide live in urban zones since 2000 or so, so I guess food would be a big deal...but alot of space exists inside the modern city: roads, fallow real estate, roofs, and the potential for greenhouses is big (lots of waste heat in the city, etc...).

I know that I cannot grow enuf for myself without help, but I imagine is the economic society we know collapsed my family would be OK--is that too optimistic? to hippie?

Heck, it might be good for folks to get out of the rat race, stay home and learn some real skills--

Spend time on farming, hunting, fishing, cooking, repairing houses, and making clothes...is that so bad? sitting around teaching kids by doing, chatting...just enjoying our time (as people).

The modern world is bunk: let's rock out to the "Gang of Four" (one of my favs)

I almost want a crunch to hit, although I realize that would mean alot of suffering--

But that is OK, there is even more needless suffering now that is tolerated without any chance to change for the better, or at least, whatever chance there is to change for the better becomes marginalized--

...without real structural change, this system will fail: capitalism is bunk (as in a BS idea from the start). The free market as a concept is lacking in meaning when seen against the backdrop of the modern money system.

Was money an idea/concept promoted by a specific person or culture?

Read it twice.  Published in todays The Olympian (March 8th, 2007).  I don't think it will change any minds, but it made me feel good but sad at the same time.  She has a solution, what is yours?

Ask Questions/Get Answers (a d20 questionnaire)

What are the hidden truths that permeate our lives?#1

What do you have to do that you just don’t like?#2

Where do you really make your money?#3

Why is the government involved in money; what is wrong with the gold standard?#4

What should be done to those that pollute air/soil/water, or needlessly kill animals or plants?#5

Should all killing be outlawed, or is deadly force sometimes justified?#6

Isn’t fresh, edible food invaluable?#7

Is the US intolerant of nomads?#8

What justifies consumption of resources (geography/energy/time/effort)?#9

When looking at the bounty in North America (for instance), why do most people choose to work yet complain about not being able to afford stuff?#10

Why are modern humans virtually bereft of any “basic” knowledge of survival, and cannot live as hunters & gatherers?(like Ted Nuget)#11

Are most folks lazy intellectually and physically?#12

With the hyper-specialization of skills in modern society, is general knowledge and capability decreasing in the human population, and if so, why?#13

What is the most complicated thing you have built from scratch? (pls include any food recipes as needed >yum!: edible research<)#14

How far way does your food come from?#15

Can you bake a loaf of bread without a recipe?#16

Where are your shoes from? -can you make shoes?#17

Did you throw away your last recliner, or is it sitting on the carport waiting to be re-upholstered as soon as a certain book comes back to the local public library?#18

How many jokes can you tell?#19

If modern life makes sense, and you just love it and think the world is just the way it should be, will you please write an short essay and explain it please?#20

Submitted by Poor Peoples Union on Thu, 03/08/2007 - 2:13pm.

All,

The Poor People's Union needs everyone's help to keep up the momentum we gained from the downtown Camp Quixote action. We got a lot of people's attention and now it's time to push our platform further.

There is a group meeting to begin planning for a Service Review Council, this group is made up primarily of service providers and other advocates, thus far, I am the only member of the PPU who has shown up. The future of services in our area depends on how this process is established, and I don't want to see it hijacked by bureaucrats. The voice of the people is needed.

There is also much work to be done to assist Camp Quixote in finding a permanent piece of land.

Camp Quixote is entering into the natural process of separating itself from the PPU and needs everyone's support and efforts to make this transition seamless. This could come in many different forms. Provide a meal for the camp once a week. If you have experience with consensus decision making, go give a training. Most importantly, stay connected with the campers, keep in touch with them. Emotional support is the most empowering kind.

The PPU is also planning MayDay activities, and we want to get as many people together as possible and make MayDay as fun and safe as possible.

If you would like to be a part of any of this planning, please contact me at 359.3293.

Thank you,

Rob Richards

This does not bode well for the independent book world, good old HR6407, Bush's Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act: Bush's Postal Signing Statement - Great, so now they can just open our mail without a judge's warrent?

"No letter of such a class of domestic origin shall be opened except under authority of a search warrant authorized by law, or by an officer or employee of the Postal Service for the sole purpose of determining an address at which the letter can be delivered, or pursuant to the authorization of the addressee.

The intent of Congress seems to be to ensure that domestic mail remains a private communication. But in the signing statement, President Bush said he would ignore the law and 'conduct searches in exigent circumstances.'

What is an "exigent circumstance"? It's a legal term, and it means, in lay terms, "emergency." Interestingly, Attorney General Gonzales noted in 2005 that only in a rare circumstance could the government open mail in 'an emergency.' "

Could you be a little more confusing?

More here: Fight Bush & management's attacks on postal workers!

Add to that Boing Boing's disturbing/funny reportage of the sudden absence of clocks in 37,000 of our nation's post offices and I smell an over-arching conspiracy. Or maybe my girls just have shit in their diapers again.

But I've always considered postal employees to be the pinnacle of government workers and members of the least corrupt and most efficient government organization on the planet. No wonder Bush wants to take power away from them too, he must be jealous!

Seriously though, when my rebellion gets rollin' I'm recruiting all the postal employees right off the bat. Get them and the dock workers and the young parents and you've got yourself a revolution!

Even though Hannity went on one of his delusionary psycho-tirades (I know that it's just your job Sean - but shame on you for the distortions and flat out lies); These two did a good job. I can't figure out how to link directly to this video. Here are the instructions:

1. go here.

2. Scroll down to SHOWS.

3. Click on "Shocking Tape! Anti-war protestors target military supply units in Washington state".
