Hey folks,

By now you have likely seen some of the national attention our recent report about Bisphenol A (BPA), an ingredient used in plastic bottles and in the lining of food cans, has generated. BPA has been shown to be toxic in low doses, and has been linked to breast and prostate cancer, diabetes and infertility. Pregnant women and infants are most at-risk, and yet there are currently no safety standards established.

After a recent report by Environment California and a blog post by Julie Deardorff, the top manufacturers of glass baby bottles have had their supply completely depleted.

So, we here at EWG have come up with a plan to make several more glass bottles available, and hopefully raise a few bucks to put toward our continued research and advocacy to keep kids safe from toxic chemicals.

Currently listed on Ebay, here, here, here, and here, are gently used, 4-oz glass breastmilk collection and storage bottles made by Lansinoh. They were used by an EWG staffer, who realizes the importance of non-plastic alternatives for collecting and storing nature's best food for babies--breastmilk.

You're invited to join us for homegrown fun at the Black Lake Grange this Friday for our all-comers monthly bluegrass jam. We generally start at 6 and go to about 9 (or later if we're having too much fun!). This will be the last official jam of the season, but stay tuned as we may extend it a month or two.

All experience and age levels welcome. You don't have to play or sing to have fun at the jam. If you just like bluegrass music and would like to hang out with friendly folk this event is for you.

Stringed acoustic instruments (and the occasional harmonica) invited. If you can sing, so much the better! We'll pass the hat to help pay for use of the Grange. Light refreshments served. NO alcohol or drugs allowed.

Get to the Grange: from Olympia west side or S.R. 101, go south on Black Lake Blvd. all the way past Black Lake. Grange is at sharp right-hand turn where the road turns into 62nd Ave. Look for flashing light over road at fire station. Grange is just past it on the right.

Hope to see you there!

Noemie Maxwell on washblog.com has just posted an excellent piece - Tacoma Stryker Protests -- Important Direct Action Against the Occupation, here is the intro:

The March, 2007 protests against the militarization of Tacoma's port began, in a sense, about 3 years ago in Olympia.  Here's an outline of that history and current events, with links to blog and newspaper articles and videos.  This is a sigificant anti-war action that appears designed to achieve specific objectives -- and that seems to already be doing so.

Go read it.

I'm wrapped up in a rain coat enjoying my almost Spring Oly morning walk and I hear the sound of music swell as it draws near. My head is up in time to look round for the vehicle that must have windows down and driver enjoying. Plus now all this is enhanced by the bellow of a young male who surely is celebrating the approach of Spring.

Usually, another day, different season, I might guess that I'm being cat-called but today is today, the young man is not hassling me and we can share the road. I muse on how the sap rises in the Spring but once I'm home and in google heaven I discover that no, it does not.

Spring is a time for loosening up, aimless strolls, and ecstatic bellows. We can dust off our sense of humor, indulge in creativity, seek inspiration, stand up for what we believe in, and remind each other that sometimes a bellow is a bellow. Sometimes Spring is a season or a mechanical part or a source of water. All is good.

What signs of Spring are you enjoying?

Now this is what I'm talkin' about. Living in Olympia, I know a lot of girls who have gone glass... but they usually espoused local economy or support-your-local-glass-blower reasoning, not enviro/health/what the hell am I putting in my cooter? logic. There are a ton of links on these various articles too for the blossoming green-kink in all of us. Solar vibrators? Sweet. Thanks to Treehugger, we now have a few alternatives to choose from:

How to Buy a Green Sex Toy
- So you eat organic veggies, drive a hybrid, and use eco-friendly detergent? What about sex toys? Make sure you are sitting comfortably to learn about what chemicals you may be taking to bed with you. Do you dare to go green between your organic sheets? TreeHuggerTV gets the sweet lowdown with a report inspired by writer Emily Gertz. The phthalates found in traditional sex toys can cause cancer, damage our reproductive systems, impair sperm, and damage the planet. Watch the vox pops in the streets as people realise that the objects they’ve been using to pleasure themselves and their partners might have longer terms effects on their bodies than they wanted. Carolyn Riccardi, Education Coordinator at Babeland, gives us a tour of PVC-free green sex toys that keep us sexy and healthy. Love the earth while you make love!

Sustainable Sex Toys - For treehuggers, it can be hard to get through the day without guilty, pre-occupied micro-decisions. You might regretfully take a cab rather than the bus, or grab Styrofoam take-away instead of just sitting down and eating from a plate. In the bedroom, it can be an accomplishment to wade through all of the cultural pollutants and just enjoy ambivalence-free pleasures. So, once you’ve happily integrated one into your life, who wants to worry about a carcinogenic dildo? Or non-biodegradable paddles whose ultimate punishment will mean an eternity of landfill stink? Not sexy. We have assembled an array of toys and info for you and your partner(s) in crime! Be sure and let us know what we’ve missed.

The war in Iraq will grind on until the mission objective is met: finding the Ark of the Covenant and leveraging its power for the Bush regime.

Rationing of goods will happen in this war as soon as Halliburton or WalMart can figure out a way to profit on it. Until then true patriots will have to continue to support the war effort by living their lives the American Way: by buying cheap disposable goods on credit.

Returning Wounded Vets will be awarded the best advice the U.S. government has to offer: "Pull yourself up by your bootstraps, you lazy bums!"

2008 will bring in a Democrat to the white house and whoever that is will continue with business as usual in Iraq while giving some lip service to the eventual withdrawal.

Universal Healthcare will take hold about 1.5 years after the toll of either:
1. Smallpox resurgence; 2. Flu Pandemic; 3. other major crisis. But only if the U.S. death-toll exceeds 15% of the top half of the population measured by net worth, the margin of acceptability.

Protesters will not stop the war, but they will popularize a new form of fashion: puppet pants.

The coming health care crisis will re-popularize religion in the U.S.; if the death-toll exceeds 25% that religion will be Islam, a result of humanitarian aid and doctors in heavy protective suits from the mid-east.

Pigs will fly. Police will go airborne rather than be tied to land. Since the penalties for many offenses will be death, which may be carried out before the formality of trial, land contact will be rendered obsolete; also, too germy.

Hippies will still claim everything can be cured by Echinacea, no matter what scientific evidence to the contrary is provided.

The homeless problem will be solved, as the coming pandemic will crush housing prices.

The U.S. will split into five separate nations; and Iowa will fall in the sea.

Olyblog - a placeblog for Olympia Washington

There's something happening in Olympia, Washington. Dr. Rick McKinnon and his band of bloggers have organically built up quite a following for Olyblog, their place blog for Olympia, the capital of Washington state in the USA.

Perhaps Oly's unique mix of legislators, academic, artists and students have combined to make the Olyblog part of the vanguard of placeblogging. I bet they are drawing on Oly's rich heritage of activism and online and offline expression.

I wanted to take the time to share some things I have learned about the war since my husband left. Im sure most people will throw comments down about how he/I are brain washed or whatever. That Im just parroting what the President says, however its nothing near that. The President is my husband's boss and I respect him and the choices he has made.

Here are some truths that I have learned...

 1. Most of what we see on TV is very old news. By old many things have occured months prior.

2. Out of the news we see here about 10% is accurate.

3. Most of the attacks are not directed at our troops but at their own people. Our troops... vehicles and such end up in a bad place at the wrong time.

4. The region  is much bigger than most people realize... the size of the North East.

5. Soldiers are really helping neighborhoods gain some security and a sense of safety. There are really some great relationships with the people the protect among the soldiers.

6. The vehicles that many people are protesting are keeping our soldiers who must go to war alive. They are specifically designed for this type of warfare.

I have so many more but Im not even sure how this will go over. There really are so many things that are not true that we see every day. Please keep that in mind...

I think having the right to prosest is important... but understand that standing in front of men and women yelling the chants said on the video is really insulting to them and their families.  They are doing their job they are helping... I know people dont see it but they are....

Prostesting isnt going to change the war.... instead youre saying hateful things at the people who honestly care about the country...Keep that in mind

God Bless our Troops - - - may they come home safe
