Apr 17 2007 - 8:00pm Apr 17 2007 - 10:30pm Diet for a Small Planet author explores keys to strong democracy Best-selling author and social change activist Frances Moore Lappé will speak at The Evergreen State College as a part of the Willi Unsoeld Seminar Series at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 17 in the college’s Longhouse Center. Lappé’s presentation is titled Democracy's Edge – How to take back the America we love. Admission is free, though donations will be accepted to support the Willi Unsoeld Seminar Endowment. Lappé currently leads the Small Planet Institute in Cambridge, Mass. along with her daughter Anna. The group works to foster positive democratic social change around the world. Lappé is also the author of 15 books, including the bestseller Diet for a Small Planet, as well as her current book, Democracy’s Edge: Choosing to save our country by bringing democracy to life. The Unsoeld Seminar Series brings to The Evergreen State College distinguished visitors who reflect the values and philosophy of Willi Unsoeld, a founding faculty member, philosopher, theologian and mountaineer. Beyond the Evergreen community, Unsoeld was well known for his first ascent of the West Ridge of Mt. Everest with Tom Hornbein, in which they made the first successful traverse of any Himalayan peak. For this feat, President John F. Kennedy presented them with the Hubbard Medal, The National Geographic Society's highest honor. The annual Unsoeld Seminar is endowed as a "living memorial" in honor of Willi Unsoeld who lost his life in an avalanche on Mt. Rainier in 1979. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call 867-6402.

1997: Friday, May 2: May Day event with music, speakers, and food. 7pm at the Liberation Cafe (116 4th Ave. E., downtown Olympia). Sponsored by Olympia Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) and Liberation Cafe. ![]() 1998: May Day is still celebrated by socialist, communist, and labor organizations in America. May Day 1998 saw a small demonstration in Olympia against the Washington State "anarchy and sabotage" statute, which in 1919 made it illegal for anyone to display banners, flags, or emblems that are perceived to advocate subversion of the US Constitution, federal or state laws.
