From an email following the Oly 22 trial:

The Port of Oly and other ports are public domain and there is good reason for that ...they should never be privatized or allowed to be managed by the corporate backed fascist police state.  The people of the community in Olympia can advocate to de-militarize the port of Oly so that it never again is used for war transports without the consent of the population.  This means that unless people feel there is a war that is worth supplying transports for there will never be allowed these types of transports again.

Outside of any argument of Iraq, the above is correct. Our port should never be used for any purpose that we disagree with. Port commissioners are public officials and should respect the will of the citizens they represent. Or, they'll find themselves booted out of office.

Which begs the question, why isn't anyone running for port commissioner?

Granted, there is only one seat open, but commissioner Bob Van Schoorl is currently unchallenged.

UPDATE: There are actually two seats up for grabs this year, and both commissioners Bob McGregor and Bob Van Schoorl are unchallenged.

So, what's the deal?

My family and I have been trying to find ways to reduce our impact on the Earth.  One thing I covet are these little babies...ECOBAGS Shopping Systems...I hate all the plastic bags that come from the grocery store and hate even more the little plastic bags that you put your produce and bulk foods in so this site makes me happy!  I hope to order some in the near future.

We have also completely eliminated paper towels!  The husby was skeptical but after a few weeks he was hooked on the idea as well.  And I find nothing more soothing than folding the large stack of cloth towels ~ add that to the list of things that make me a nerd!  =)    As soon as the kids go to bed tonight, I will be sewing up a basket of cloth napkins for meal times.  They are super easy to make and I'll be using scraps from my fabric bin to save some dough!  Here are the directions I'll be using.

I am almost out of my store bought laundry soap and I am looking forward to trying out a recipe that I found and making it myself.  The cost is about .71 cents for 64 loads (so about .01 cent per load!  Sweet!)  Here is the recipe I'll be trying.  I'll be adding some essential oil of tangerine that I have already as well.  I'm also going to try white vinegar in the rinse cycle (with essential oils of course!).

And some notes from the "farm" ~ All three of our chickens are laying regularly now (each with their own colored egg!) which makes me happy!  I even got to see Henrietta lay her little brown egg this afternoon.  Raven lays a lovely green colored egg and Scout lays a greenish brown.  Loveliness.  <3

Pedestrian Interference Ordinance

Officer Hovan and Officer Schumacher respond to a complaint that Cisco (sp?) was panhandling. When I took this picture they were asking him to move on. He moved.

I asked Officer Schumacher if the ordinance was being enforced and she said that (to the best of her knowledge) it wasn't, that they were still in the informative stage. (I took this to mean that OPD hasn't made any arrests or written any citations in regard to the ordinance.)

There will be an ongoing vigil in protest of the ordinance and discrimination against homeless people on Thursday's from 5pm to 6pm at the corner by Dumpster Values.
