(Forwarded from OMJP list-serv.)

For those itching to finally attend a Cuba event in Olympia, the 18th Annual U.S. to Cuba Friendshipment passes through town Tuesday. The caravan collects material aid throughout the U.S. and openly crosses the border to Mexico, defying the travel ban and trade blockade.

At the event, we'll have a film presentation about the history of the caravan and then testimonials from fellow caravanistas who've made the journey. (Including Oly local Rick Fellowes, a mechanic and bus driver for our route.) We'll also have some snacks, fruit, etc for the free event so do come.

Also, get creative and bring anything of worth you have that's in good or new condition to be donated to those in Cuba. Disposable medical supplies are great like unopened packages of medical gloves. Even better would be medical textbooks in English! That would be awesome! Or contribute anything you have that's for recreational use (like sports equipment) or an appliance.

Or, you can donate yourself for an exciting week in Cuba as applications to join the caravanistas are still being accepted. This year, the caravan will be down for the exciting 26th of July celebration celebrating Cuban independence.

And donate money, too, to fuel the bus you'll see driving around town in the next few days. Or write checks to IFCO, a tax-deductible organization. There are so many ways to give back to the inspiring global example that is Cuba. Come to Traditions Cafe in Olympia at 7 p.m. on July 3rd to take part. Thanks, and see you there.

Pornography addiction challenges churches

Lustful tendencies often are hidden in climate of shame
Helen T. Gray
McClatchy Newspapers

Many people in religious circles say it's one of the biggest problems facing families and congregations.

Yet, it can go undetected, it has no outward signs and it barely is discussed.

The culprit? Pornography.

The Rev. Steven Showalter of Pure Morality Ministries calls it "the silent killer" in the church. "There are individuals in our churches who struggle with porn every day," he said. "They may be the piano player, the Sunday school teacher, the youth pastor and maybe even the pastor.

"Pornography is much like carbon monoxide. Both are virtually undetectable, and both kill."

 Consider these statistics:

Fifty percent of all Christian men and 20 percent of all Christian women are addicted to pornograp hy, according to a 2006 poll by ChristiaNet.

Thirty-three percent of pastors and 36 percent of laity admitted visiting a sexually explicit Web site, according to research published in 2006 by Christianity Today.

Fifty-seven percent of pastors said pornography was the most damaging sexual issue affecting their congregations, and 36 percent of congregants said it was the most damaging sexual issue affecting them personally, according to a 2005 survey published by Christianity Today International.

My fellow Olympians.

I was at a local tavern the other night, and witnessed a young woman being grabbed by the arm and a verbal exchange between her and the bartender that left her crying and running out the door.

I'm new here, but a scene like that doesn't sit well with me.

After asking around in the following week, I found out that this "BroHo" place has already been a haven for one date rapist a few years ago.

And now it seems to be a no holds barred, drunken free for all on the weekends.

Being in a law enforcement related job, I did some searching...

I found that this is one of "the" taverns in Olympia.

But I will not frequent it again.

One of it's long time employees is proven to be a wife beater and sexual predator.

With a criminal history in NV and WA.

I was under the impression that this was a safe little town.

I suppose there's really no such thing.

I for one, will not set foot inside the Brotherhood until that male bartender is gone.

If anyone needs to know, I can provide a list of court cases and numbers.

Starting with THURSTON COUNTY DISTRICT COURT case # C00580349.
