I am slowly reading the book The Argument Culture: Moving from Debate to Dialogue by Deborah Tannen and have to share this bit (originally written as all one paragraph, I changed spacing):

The argument culture limits the information we get rather than broadening it in another way.
When a certain kind of interaction is the norm, those who feel comfortable with that type of interaction are drawn to participate, and those who do not feel comfortable with it recoil and go elsewhere.
If public discourse included a broad range of types, we would be making room for individuals with different temperaments to take part and contribute their perspectives and insights.
But when debate, opposition, and fights overwhelmingly predominate, those who enjoy verbal sparring are likely to take part -- by calling in to talk shows, writing letters to the editor or articles, becoming journalists -- and those who cannot comfortably take part in oppositional discourse, or do not wish to, are likely to opt out.

You can't imagine how great it was to wake up to this article in the Olympian.

Homeless rules up for vote in 2 cities

Matt Batcheldor
The Olympian

Tent cities for the homeless, such as Olympia’s Camp Quixote III, would be legally recognized and regulated under ordinances that the Olympia and Tumwater city councils are considering. But Lacey and Thurston County have no plans to join them.

In an unusual move, Olympia and Tumwater are considering the same measure at the same time. Olympia Councilman Jeff Kingsbury will bring the ordinance to the Olympia City Council on Tuesday and ask for a vote July 17. The Tumwater City Council will have a public hearing about it July 17, Councilwoman Karen Valenzuela said, and she wants to pass the measure as an emergency ordinance the same night.

Is on RIGHT NOW on BRAVO. So far the music has kind of stunk, but I'm hoping it will improve.

The band is Skyhooks. They are from the 70's. And Australia. At least the song has a good message.

This is my city

This is your city

This is our city now

Well I’m back in the land of second chances

And rock ‘n’ roll shows where nobody dances
Back in the land of chicken and chips
Mars Bars and roadside tips

And if you don’t like it

Then that’s too bad
