I remember a group of folks starting a book club in the past, and I was wondering if people would like to resurrect it.

I just bought "The Coming Anarchy: Shattering the Dreams of the Post Cold War" by Robert Kaplan (not a book about anarchy as a social/political theory, just in case the titled scared you off). After reading about half of the introduction, I am absolutely fascinated. It might be kind of a "scare book", a la "The Long Emergency" (about peak oil), but I think it will also shed a lot of light on our history of militarization, the by products of that on the American psyche, and the effect that our "disillusionment" after great conflicts (ie post WWI Wilsonianism) has on the rest of the world.

So if people want to join me in discussion about this book, I would be really excited. We could try to have a meetup, or we could do it over the blog.

Big Brothers Big Sisters needs a web site overhaul. Are there any web designers out there that would like to donate their skills to a great community service non-profit?

Let me know.

Thanks,

Larry

ENTERTAINMENT EXPLOSION Presents: Hats Off! Fall Variety Show/Benefit Concert Sept. 30th

Doors open at 1:40 p.m., show starts at 2:00 p.m. at the Olympia High School Performing Arts Center, located at 1302 North St SE.

Tickets are only $8.00 and are being sold in advance and at the door!

You may remember Entertainment Explosion from their sell-out benefit concert for homeless kids last February at the Washington Center. The American Red Cross awarded them a 2007 Community Hero Award for that effort.

The September 30 performance will be a benefit for a local non-profit organization, the Dispute Resolution Center of Thurston County (DRC). The DRC has been creating peace in our community for 17 years, by helping people resolve their disputes outside of court. Their theme? Mediate! Don’t litigate!

This delightful show will feature your favorite western, patriotic, and Broadway hits performed by Entertainment Explosion’s dynamic troupe of 55+ year old singers and dancers. Tap-dancers, barbershop quartets, and more will be onstage at the show.

Call the Dispute Resolution Center at (360) 956-1155 to to buy your tickets or for more information.

OLYMPIA – Thurston County will accept tires, appliances, computers and other recyclable items for minimal or no cost at two Community Recycle Day events. The events will be held from
9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on:

• Saturday, September 15 at the South Sound Speedway, 3720 183rd Ave. S.W. in Rochester.
• Saturday, September 22 at the Thurston County Fairgrounds lower parking lot, 3054 Carpenter Road S.E. near Lacey.
These events are for residential recycling only, not business recycling. The items do not need to be in working condition, unless they are being donated to Goodwill. If your item is working, you may want to consider giving it to someone you know or through the website: www.2good2toss.com.
To help cashiers at Community Recycle Days track inventory, residents should bring a tally sheet of items they are taking to the events. The tally sheet is available online at: www.co.thurston.wa.us/wwm (click on Recycling, then click on Community Recycle Days). The tally sheet is also included on the back page of the county’s latest edition of “Talkin’ Trash,” which has been mailed to all Thurston County households.

So one of the things I like to keep tabs on with OlyBlog is the list of the top referrers to this site. It's a nice 3-day snapshot of where external OlyBlog interest is coming from. Since I took on site administration duties Google search has been the source of over 1000 "hits" every time I've checked, without fail. Until today.

For those of you who don't know, the web search field is seen as pretty important by people who like advertising money. So why is any of this interesting? Well, today is the first time I've ever seen Microsoft live in the top 10. And I couldn't help but notice it coinciding with the first time I've ever seen Google source less than 1000 hits.

OlyBlog as zeitgeist of our wired times.
