My Labor Day focused on a less traditionally thought of labor for this day--childbirth. Today I attended a BOLD (Birth on Labor Day) event which was put on by some Oly moms and affiliated with local doulas and other childbirth professionals.

"BOLD is a global movement to make maternity care mother-friendly through events that use the arts to inspire communities to educate themselves, speak their truth, an take action on maternity care issues."

My reasons for going were threefold: 1) I am all over opportunities to talk about the birth of my daughter, 2) I wanted to hear about experiences from other woman, and 3) I thought it would be a good opportunity to gather with other women (other mothers) in a safe, non-oppressive environment. I was not disappointed.

When time started to wane and I was faced with the decision to share my story or hear the story of another woman, I opted for the latter. I wanted to absorb all that these women were willing to give. I have a lot to learn.

Today's experience at BOLD was a sharp reminder of how powerful, relevant, and missing the feminine/femaleness is in our society. Women's birthing experiences should be heard, shared, and passed down. The event was the first year of BOLD in Olympia, and I hope that this is a first of many.

We lost power for about 30 seconds right after 10 p.m. So exciting! I had my computer on, but fortunately it wasn't affected -- thank goodness for my surge protector! What a great ending to the weekend.

The street in front of my house (Maringo Rd) is like a damn river. Nice to see some lighting and thunder. One thing I miss from Florida.

Meta and I are going out for coffee at Artisans. Anyone is welcome to join us! (We'll be there by 8:15)

EDIT: Scratch that.  Artisans is closed for Labor Day.  We've diverted to Le Voyeur (404 4th Ave, cross street Adams, across the street from the artesian well).

Hi All, I don't quite understand if I'm posting this in the right place, if not I apologize and hope that the moderators will move it. I wanted to share a letter I wrote to the OFS Board regarding the recent firing, and my experience with Jeff and the theatre. I hope the people who are boycotting can attempt to put this incident in a historic context, and that we can all make the effort to trust accounts of experiences that are not our own.

Dear OFS Board,

I wanted to write regarding the recent firing of Jeffrey Bartone, and the subsequent criticism and walkout by the projectionists. Part of the complaint in the projectionists' open letter was that this firing signified that the board is out of touch with what the OFS community wants. I would like to tell you: nothing could be further from the truth.

I have produced shows and festivals at the theatre for over 12 years, and was also formerly on the OFS Board of Directors. I have had extensive contact with Jeffrey in many different contexts. He is a great person, but terribly suited to any position where he has to work with the public, let alone be the main face of the organization for many groups who use the theatre. He actively makes the theatre unwelcoming, makes you feel like you have no right to be there. His behavior ranges from the run-of-the-mill rude to bizarrely aggressive- like nothing I have seen in the 150-odd venues I have produced shows in across the country.

Before I get into the meat and potatoes of my editorial, I want to start by saying a couple of things (1) I have no personal ax to grind and (2) I want what is best for the community.

I've read some of the notes on the docent mail about a comment that was made on the thread about Stormans and Plan B.  I've also tried to follow all the comments to watch the direction and emotions.  Two of my attempts to post didn't hit the page and I'll assume that was a glitch in the system.

My concern - regardless of what someone said, I'd like to see all of us avoid the 10 cent psychiatry business.  The idea of anyone suggesting that so and so needs anger management or sensitivity training on women's issues, to me, is a veiled insult that can be as damaging as the original "offensive" statement (I'll admit I did not see it, and don't know exactly what it is).

We will not always agree on everything and sometime, in the heat of the moment, things will be said that don't make everyone comfortable, but that does not put someone in charge of psycho-analysis.  We are all creatures of emotion and frankly, someone that comes off robotic, as opposed to showing some passion and emotion, scares me more.  Let's remember that this is words on paper that cannot always demonstrate voice infliction, therefore, one man's sarcasm can be another's offense.

Let's make sure that we don't lose sight that this is an opportunity for an exchange of ideas and to have some fun.  Let's not take ourselves too damned seriously.

Over the weekend there have been a slew of people posting up about the goings on down at the Olympia Film Society (me included), especially regarding to the recent firing of Operations Manager Jeff Bartone.

I think the conversation has been great, but in the interest of keeping the front page of Olyblog clean, I've taken the posts off the front page and consolidated them onto this post.

I've also turned the comments off on this post so you can put your thoughts up on any of the posts below by following the links.

Vivica has some thoughts in her try at "Examination by Questioning":

I want to understand the atmosphere of OFS, so I have many questions.

  1. A previous writer stated that the OFS board was not fully staffed. If this is the case, why is the board not fully staffed? So many people here have expressed such strong opinions on how OFS should be run, how many have put in an application for or work on the board? Or on the film selection committees? Or event planning committees?
  2. The OFS bylaws are frequently referred to or admired in many of the blogs I have read. What attempts were made to address these issues through available means before progressing to a strike? And is this strike to hurt OFS (as it seems to be creating division and angst) out of anger? What are the specific goals of this strike?
  3. ...

cmdawdy puts in his or her "member two-bits":

...The OFS is very important to the local progressive community and to all others who might venture into the theater to satisfy their yearning for something different from whatever that other stuff is. I think it is important to keep this venue alive and thriving in our community.
