I've checked out so many books on clowning and laughter and small businesses and so on but not yet shared most of my findings. I'm returning these today: Fantagraphics Books and Roger B. Almost every week this is the "What's on the city council's plate this week" review. I don't cover everything, so if you want the full rundown, read the packet and agenda yourself. Will we be voting for a new fire station and a new training center in August? The city council could decide on Tuesday at their regular session. The council will consider whether to put a $16.5 million dollar, 20 year levy on the ballot. The levy will pay for a ~$11 million fire station and new training center plus the needed new equipment (you know, trucks). Here's a general rundown from the staff report on the finances:

Personally I would get rid of the Port of Olympia. They are a pimple on the buttocks of local government. The marine terminal is a joke and they have no business operating a marina in direct competition with local firms...

David Rauh from Mixx96 is heading up this awesome project. The gist of it is that local artists can get an honorarium for arting-up a bench in downtown. The press release is here, the request for proposals is here, and the application is here. The downside is that it's only for five benches right now, but I guess we could always press for more in the future. Press.... would that be a bench press?

So I did it. I managed to live beyond Mar. 27, 2008. I'm living proof that death-date calculator is a bunch of hooey. In other unimportant news, one of my cats, Spooky, has the ability to open cabinet doors. He does this and then crawls in and just vanishes for awhile. Recently I observed him opening a cabinet door and going inside. Then about a minute later he emerged, from a cabinet on the other side of the room!!! Since then I have seen this happen three more times. How does he do it? When I mentioned this mystery to another OlyBlogger, she told me that with talents like this, Spooky could probably expect to be appointed to a post on the, er, Cabinet when one of my other cats, Buster is elected President.

I received the following message from my local DNUG, the South Sound .NET Users Group about The Code Camp coming to our area. I plan on attending and hope to see you there.
"Are you ready for the Code Trip to come to Olympia? Jason Mauer is coming back to Olympia with a tour bus full of geeks. They'll be pulling up to the Thurston County Fairgrounds on Monday, April 14th. There will be giveaways, and great information on the newest technology from great presenters.

Nancy over at the envirotalk list found a legal ad on the Olympian referring to a possible new downtown noise ordinance. Huh? What new noise ordinance? Well, the Olympia Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on improving (I guess) the city's noise ordinance on April 7. So, what this is all about is putting a ceiling on noise in downtown. Apparently there is no maximum allowed noise you can make right now. From the staff report (btw, I know the staff report says 2007, but it is a mistake. It should be 2008): |
