Whew! I just got done reading will_is_ok's Fudge post. Quite a gem.

Sometimes, when I'm bored, I explore OlyBlog's nether regions. Here's my question for anyone in the know.

What is the longest thread in OlyBlog history?

Hi there, Olybloggers. I'm a long-time reader, first-time poster. Emmett O'Connell suggested that I cross-post my series on the four applicants for the Olympia School Board slot that opened when Rich Nafziger resigned, so here goes. Catch my other blogging at decorabilia, Washington Teachers, and 5/17.

The series goes in reverse alphabetical order, and will wrap up before March 12, when the candidates will face questions in a "community forum environment." I've made care to accurately quote or represent the candidates, and any potential errors are my own.

Parent activist Theresa Tsou is ready to bring her scientific expertise and data-driven approach to the Olympia School Board. A Ph.D. holder and groundfish expert, Dr. Tsou is known in the community for volunteer and committee work, and for her role in the opposing the "Connected Math" curriculum that was adopted last year.

While looking through various local community resources online I came across this from SafePlace and I want to pass it on:
5 things to say to a survivor of intimate violence
1) I’m afraid for your safety
2) I’m afraid for the safety of your children/family
3) You don’t deserve to be controlled or abused
4) This is not your fault
5) There are places to call for help

If you need more information about intimate violence, or what to say to someone in this situation, SafePlace is available 24-hours a day. Call us at 360-754-6300 (voice), 360-943-6703 (TTY) or email: help@safeplaceolympia.org.

  • There are a couple polemic signs held by the same man being discussed today. Many times I've driven past one and flipped the bird in response. Many other times I've driven past the other and given a thumbs up. Ah, the complexities of life, philosophy and convictions.
  • Support Community Radio. Support Independent Musicians. Support the right to hear News that Clear Channel's too afraid to give you. Call KAOS and become a member. For as little as $35 (for the 35th anniversary of our station) you can help support the community. (Membership brings with it discounts to numerous local businesses.)

Call 867-KAOS during your favorite show - or during some other show you feel deserves a nod of recognition - or during one of the late night shows since those programmers often feel left out of the love.

  • Life's gotten easier since Pizza Hut developed online ordering. Now if only we could get The Reef, Quality Burrito, Peppers, Le Voyeur, Old Skool, Saigon Rendezvous and The Brotherhood to follow suit.
  • Tammy just finished a two-month Improv class at the Olympia Center. They decided to add another two months which begins tomorrow. Tammy signed up to continue, I was convinced to join. This could get interesting.
  • Is there anyone here I still owe a drink too? There's Meta who's got a couple of drinks coming, I think I offered coffee to someone else during a tense moment.
  • {EDIT: Last minute add-on inspired by Gug.]

We should have an Olyblog Poetry Slam. Somebody set it up and make it happen.

Normally I don't keep or post this sort of thing, but given past problems, and the fact the OPD has received communication from my attorney, I figured it may be of interest to some...

Got a ride downtown with a friend.  Went to Javaflow and bought some tea.  Left Javaflow and went up to Last Word Books (I LOVE that place!!!)  and bought Bizzare Tales from World War II.  Should be interesting.

Stopped in at Cafe Vita to get a pastry and jump online for a minute.  Tasty pastry, fast wi-fi and nobody noticed or (I hope) cares about the Ruger P89 on my right hip.  Wearing faded black jeans, with a nice grey button down shirt and ballcap.

No problems, no funny looks.

Even though I know that InterCity Transit knows OC is legal on the bus, I still can't bring myself to do it until I recieve a letter back from them acknowledging the recent training I have heard their operators have receieved.  I can't afford to have trouble with IT.

'Street of Dreams' homes burn

Seattle PI

WOODINVILLE -- Explosive devices were found inside multimillion-dollar show homes that burned in a suburb north of Seattle Monday, fire officials said. Authorities also found a spray-painted sign purportedly left by a radical environmental group at the scene.
Any thoughts about this? Especially with the current trial of Briana Waters going on in Tacoma?

I've posted this elsewhere as well, but think I may get a blogger or 3 that has a similar interest, or an experience.

Soon I'm going to be experiencing a bit of a life change and want to have some extra money on hand. So my question to you: How many of you have sold guns, specifically handguns?

I currently am kicking around the option of using gunbroker.com, this is a little fuzzy for me though, does anyone have experience with this site? In particular with selling a firearm from this site?

I'm also thinking about putting an ad in the paper, but that leaves a bitter taste in my mouth as well.

I've pretty much ruled out taking any to a gunshop, only because, at least in my experience, you will be ripped off, and they have money to make I suppose.

Ideas, insight, stories, anyone?

Stonewall Youth, in partnership with Partners in Prevention Education (PiPE), is pleased to present Heal Your Y Art Therapy, the first of several series of groups for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex (lgbtqi) youth ages 14-21. This project is funded through a two-year grant from the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) to provide free group sessions for lgbtqi youth who have been subjected to crime such as homelessness, assault, hate crimes, bullying, harassment, abuse, or vandals. Youth are not required to report the crime in order to receive access to these services.

Art therapy combines art with counseling and is co-facilitated by mental health counselor, Teresa Guajardo, and art student, Tim Carbary. Youth involved with this project will be given the opportunity to heal with others who have also been subject to scarring. Each series will help youth work through the emotional and physical impact of victimization such as grief, loss, anger, isolation, and fear. There will be an emphasis on health, healing, and safety. Participants will be given the opportunity to display their Queer Art Heal Your Y artwork at local venues and events, thus creating further opportunities to be seen and heal. Individual mental health counseling is available when needed and at no charge to youth. Some art therapy projects may include:

  • · mask making
  • · soul/spirit dolls
  • · painting
  • · collaging
  • · journaling
  • · poetry writing

The first series of Heal Your Y Art Therapy begins Thursday, March 6th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. This six-week group is open to all ages 14-21 and is open to newcomers at any time during the series. There is no requirement to attend every session in this series. Subsequent groups will be limited by age and will be closed to new members once group is established.
