My First Fight

Confessions of a short, recovering book addict.

Hi. My name is Timothy Tweed and I’m a recovering book addict. I am also a short guy.

When I was in the sixth grade, I was obsessed, you could say, like most pubescent boys, with two things: Sex and violence. Upon reflection, I am astounded at how many times we see these two words linked together now days. Nevertheless, it is not my purpose here to rhapsodize on the sad condition of morality and culture in the U.S., which might have been implied by the mere mention of those two oh-so-enticing subjects. I cannot, of course, speak from any moral high ground, having been raised on The Dukes of Hazzard and Charlie’s Angels. Alas, so many of my generation were spoon-fed this type of violent soft-core crap, that it really is no wonder that we are in such a mess these days. But I digress…

Does anyone know of celebrations going on for May Day this year?

(Did I miss any posts regarding celebrations?)

I've lived in Olympia since 1989, and the Procession is the absolute pinnacle of Oly Life, in my humble opinion. Who can't feel at least a tiny bit of hope when ya see the samba dancers, in all their wisdom and glory. I want to marry them all and have flocks of dancing flamingos with them. I mean it.

We're looking for local businesses that would like to sponsor our "Olyblogger of the Month" program by donating gift certificates or goodies. The current sponsor will be acknowledged on the blog with an icon that would run for the month of sponsorship (something like the Zhonka block on the left).

March attacked by police, few people arrested

Around 50 people voiced protest against the Northwest Detention
Center
in Tacoma today. Protesters wanted to bring attention to the
private detention center located on Tacoma’s tidal flats that detains
people held on immigration violations. Protest participants passing the
bullhorn spoke about current immigration enforcement tearing families
apart while perpetuating poverty and intimidation in communities of
color.

Watch the "Smash ICE Northwest Detention Center" Video for more info about the private immigration prison on Tacoma's tidal flats.

The ten bicycle police did not have enough cops to force people on
the sidewalk. The protest march from People’s Park in Hilltop winded
it’s way down the hill into Downtown Tacoma. Police cordoned off the
Wells Fargo Plaza in preparation of the protest with riot police, many
of whom had their faces covered and displayed the latest crowd control
weaponry. Bicycle police followed the march demanding that people get
on the sidewalk.

I met with Bruce Fogg at the downtown library and he feels the need to do something reunion-y. He knew doranne for 23 years! Mara West thinks she'll have to pick up Kelly Coyle + kidlet on the way through Humboldt. Deborah Butler agrees that the end of June will work.

I'm thinking at least one lap around the track of Relay for Life and then either later Saturday night or sometime Sunday (June 28/29)
