12 mini-reviews for the short attention span, taken from dark corners of stevenl's video vault: Cookoo Cavaliers / directed by Jules White (1940, VHS). Moe Howard, Larry Fine, Curly Howard, Dorothy Appleby (uncredited), Lynton Brent (uncredited), Anita Garvin (uncredited), Bob O'Connor (uncredited), Blanche Payson (uncredited). The Stooges are fishsellers, attempting to market fish without the the benefit of ice. This affords them the opportunity for several smelly fish gags (Get it? Smelly fish gags? Nyuk nyuk nyuk). In true Stooge fashion, the plot somehow twists into their purchase of a hair salon in Mexico. Curly is in fine form. Larry is in Fine form too, but he is, after all, Larry Fine. This one is a bit different since the victims of their mayhem are beautiful women. The eyepokes here are more anemic than usual. Although other forms of violence are accompanied by sound effects, the eyepokes are strangely silent. Another odd few seconds on this short film takes place right after Moe uses a mallet to whack cement off someone's face, he celebrates by making an obscene gesture. Here are the statistics on injuries. As usual, head konks rank high: head konks 23, face slaps 5, hit with mallet 5, hit with mallet and chisel 4, hair pulled completely out 4, hit in face with fish 3, shot in butt by revolver 3, hair grabbed 2, eye pokes 2, jackhammer on cranium 2, and one each of double stomach hit, nose grab, pinched arm, stomach hit, both ears yanked, kicked in butt, peppered in face with small chunks of dry cement, ear pulled.

Longtime listeners of KAOS' Radio8Ball have noticed the disappearance of Co-Host Tammy T since last January. The story of what led to her "banishment for a period of eight years" has now been told on the inaugural post of Radio Stories, Tammy T's new blog covering her life in radio.
» It's a story Radio8Ball's creator Andras Jones doesn't want told - he's already threatened legal action along with illegally threatening blacklisting. However it's not illegal to report an honest and accurate account of personal experiences with someone, even if said experiences are negative and don't leave the subject in a flattering light. The story is long (having originally been serialized in five parts on Myspace) - covers four years meticulously - and features a woman who wouldn't agree to be pushed around or treated like a dog.

Beginning June 1st, Bread and Roses is joining forces with Capital Clubhouse in order to expand the reach and effectiveness of the Bread and Roses Mail and Vouchers Program. For nearly five years now, B&R has been providing the homeless and low income of Thurston County with mail service, laundry vouchers, and shower vouchers. As the economy worsens and times get tougher, the needs have quickly outgrown our small advocacy center. To combat this we are teaming up with, and moving those services to, Capital Clubhouse, which is located in a large building on the corner of Cherry and 7th in downtown Olympia. We're looking for volunteers to help us make this transition a smooth one by helping people with change of address forms and by staffing the voucher desk at the new location, which will consist of handing out mail, laundry vouchers, and showers vouchers. It's a very easy way to be involved, help people, and make new friends in the process. If interested, please call Rob Richards at 360.359.3293.

A little while back I referred to a lawsuit that is making its way through the state court system that might impact Lacey's new homeless ordinance. Tomorrow (sometime after 9a) the state Supreme Court will hear arguments in the case between Woodinville and Northshore United Church of Christ. A few years ago, Woodinville passed an ordinance restricting how churches can host homeless camps. Basically, the church is arguing that the city doesn't have any business telling them how they can practice religion as it relates to their helping the homeless. How the Supreme Court decides (at least I think this) will have a lot to do with whether Lacey is sued over their ordinance. The arguments will be live on TVW and I'll post them here after they're on the internet. Anyone know the typical turn-around on a state Supreme Court case?

Everytime the nice weather comes out, and it gets so hot that breathing is all that's needed to start sweating, and I feel compelled to get out the clippers and ditch the poorly-chosen plan to recreate my look of twenty years ago -
» - and after I've thrown away a bag of hair that must've weighed a pound and I start to feel that evaporating coolness and even remember the Sunblock - the weather inevitably cools down and goes back to dismal normal. It's happened more than once before, I had no reason to believe it wouldn't happen again. Sorry kids, it's too cold to go swimming now. |
